strange oil leak
« on: May 12, 2011, 08:28:01 PM »
ok guys just got my k1 cafe project on the road. bike hasnt run in awhile did a head job and all new gaskets on the engine. now started her up and she was dripping oil out of the front of the motor pretty bad wasnt sure where it was coming from but looked like it was from some of the head pucks. figured i would ride it see if it got worse. now after about a week oil leak is getting better but still have a little oil running down my kick stand after i stop riding it. also some oil on the case after riding for more than 10 min. not sure if i should keep riding it to see if it will stop or do you guys think i better pull the engine to find out.

trying to get it ready for the world tour since i might be part of the new england leg if i make it in time

How much oil do you have to add, after, say 100 miles? (You know you have to check the oil level immediately after the motor has been run for while, right?)

On the K0-K3 engines, oil leaking out the front side comes from those head pucks about 80% of the time, since there is no pressure porting on the front of the engine. But, here's something that can also cause it: if the head gasket involved was the K4-K8/F0-F3 style with the big stud holes that are supposed to clear the little collars and seals on 6 of the studs, this will let the return ports down those studs leak, also.

The cure for either one is removing the engine and pulling the head to take a look. :(

ya thats what i figured but the oil leak is slowly going away. been checking the oil still good on the stick. trying to make the tour through my state thinking of just running it then worry about it after the ride. still need to do fork seals to since ive gone through two sets since hauling it on a trailer twice across the country.

so undate on the oil leak. the oil off the kick stand was from the oiler on the front sprocket was out to far and dumping oil.
but went to a show this weekend and had got home shut the bike off and the oil leak has reapeared at the motor. got off the bike went to see where it was coming from and heard a gurgling noise coming from the front middle right side of the engine. followed by a couple of large spurts of oil running down onto the frame. bike seems to leak more oil after the engine is shut off. didnt have as much oil on the engine before it shut off.

+++ pucks........the gurgling is the vacuum in the cam-tower...............could also be a combination of wrong head gasket AND pucks!
