Where can I get new advance springs for a CB500?
« on: May 13, 2011, 03:47:39 AM »
Where's a good source for new advance springs for my CB500?

I've purchased a couple of used advance mechanisms and the springs on them were as worn out as what I already have.

While we're at it, maybe a source for CB750 springs, too? (For a buddy of mine).

I called my local Honda dealer today and he said they're NLA.

I've bought a couple of used advance mechanisms, but the springs were no better...or even worse...than what I have.
Tried cutting one, but the loop wound up at the wrong angle and slipped off the post.

Surely, there has to be a source for advance springs out there somewhere.

If we knew what the specs are, maybe we can get something really close that would work.  Spring manufacturers have billions of springs around, and chances are good that you can get something really REALLY close without too much trouble.

If we knew what the specs

Those are the operative words. I looked at some XS650 springs from MikesXS, but they're too light.

I was reading the manual the other day and ran across the pull strength spec.  The physical size we can measure.  I would like springs for both 550 and 750.  (I wonder if they are the same, cause the advancers are physically interchangeable)
So now I hafta go back and find those specs again.  Winding new springs isn't out of the question if we get the right size wire.

ps   page 88 of 550 service manual, spring force is for points spring...darn!

Nachfertigungen (imitations) of these springs were available for members of the German cbfourclub (Clubshop/Harald Dietz). You could send them an e-mail to find out where they got them from. (shop_@cbfourclub.de)

Dave, have you used the Bosch springs before? If so, do you remember which ones?

i tinkered with them once, odds are yours have gone soft and advance too quick?what are your symptoms,,pinging?i use electronic religiously, praise the spark at the right time!you can get away with murder almost with the advance curve on these engines stock, they dont have vacuum advance or anything(if they did it would be great),if it dosent ping but the advance comes up too quick you have no problem, the more advance you can run with no detonation is a plus, even with good springs you can advance till the point of pinging above the factory timing setting for a gain all over.
