1978 750K Battery Question
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:46:32 PM »
I am in need of a battery for my 1978 750K. I was going to pick up a Yuasa YB14L-A2 but a review on Bike Bandit http://www.bikebandit.com/yuasa-yumicron-battery-yb14l-a2?mg=991&t=1&td=1#ReviewHeader said "that it does not have enough amperage @ 14 Amps to start the engine"

Is this guy correct?

My knowledge was that I need 12v and 14ah

Yuasa also makes a maintenance free battery. Would this be a better option?

I am interested to know which battery I should purchase for the '78, Thanks!

That guy is absolutely wrong! That is the stock battery size. You can easily start using a 7am battery if your bike is in good working order. He either got a bad battery or has other problems with his bike, or is an idiot.

He's an idiot. The battery is a 14 amp-hour battery, but he seems to think it's got 14 cold cranking amps. Or he doesn't know the difference between Ah and CCA. That battery is plenty adequate for the bike. He may have a bad starter, a bad solenoid, or any number of other mechanical/electrical maladies preventing his bike from starting. Or maybe he's got the kill switch turned off.

Thanks guys, good to know he is wrong.

Would you recommend getting the maintenance free version ($90)or the regular one($55)?

I prefer agm batteries myself but either works. The regular lead acids require some maintenance, mainly making sure water levels are good.

Definitely the maintenance free. But "maintenance free" is a misnomer. No battery is actually maintenance free. All that means in this case is that you'll never need to add distilled water, but you still need to make sure the battery doesn't sit unused for more than a month without being charged or hooked to a battery maintainer. If you ride often, and not just a lot of short local riding, you won't have to worry about charge maintenance. There are size differences with these AGM batteries from different manufacturers, and the numbers can be confusing. Yuasa's number for your bike is YTX14AHL-BS. http://www.amazon.com/YTX14AHL-BS-Performance-Maintenance-Battery-YUAM62H4L/dp/B000UK7L0M
