Question on CB650 Driven Chain
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:20:14 PM »
Hi Guys,

I tried searching, and didn't find much on "CB650 chains" besides the cam chain!  Basically, my CB650 Custom has a fairy old chain.  It's an infinite chain - no master, and I'm pretty sure it's the original.  Anyway, I had tightened it to spec, and in two weeks of riding it's already stretched quite a bit!  And according to the "replace me" sticker on the chain adjuster, it's definitely time.

I figured "no biggy", it's 30 years old and should be replaced, so I called up the local honda shop to find out about a replacement.  The quoted me $220!!!!  I did a quick ebay search and came up with chains like this for $35:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB650-CB-650-Custom-O-Ring-Chain-New-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem19c55dfbb2QQitemZ110685453234QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Or even chain with new sprockets for just over $100.   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB-650C-CB650C-1980-1981-Chain-and-Sprocket-Set-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c16d6b824QQitemZ120642254884QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Any thoughts?  Suggestions?  Anybody have an alternative I should be looking at?  Or should I just bite the bullet and get a new OEM from Honda?  Thanks!

Only pay $220 for a chain if you like giving away money.

Look in the FAQ under "Where can I buy parts for my SOHC?".  There's a section for chain/sprocket.  Also, look on www.montecdirect.com.
