bearing retainer seal glued in!! removal?
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:52:23 PM »
my rear bearing retainer seal was, well it appears to be, glued in.
the inner ring is all soft and pliable, and just pulls away.  the outer ring, in contact with the outer edge of the retainer, is hard as a rock and wont budge.  any tricks to removing besides hrs with a sharp knife  :o
what chem can i soak it in to melt it away?
thx

Would some acetone (fingernail polish remover) disolve the glue?

There isn't much in the world that will stand up against a good quality paint remover, not the "green" stuff but the good ole stripper that will kill you,  Dichloromethane  Methanol,  mmm smells like "Victory" Use it on tank liners etc.

Unless you see some glue around it it was not glued in. The rubber ages and the steel ring in there is rather strong. Try heating the area with a heat gun (avoid the torch). I usually have to pry on the steel ring with a small pry bar (like a screwdriver but made for prying) using a bit of metal or wood at the fulcrum to avoid ruining the part that the seal is in. A lot of force is needed working around the circumference, you have to be careful not to gouge the bore: you'll see these gouges in a lot of forks where ham-handed POs have previously replaced the fork seals.

heat gun, pliers, blood and swearing got it out.  :o
thanks
the outer threads of the retainer looked as though they were buggered when the PO put them in last.
i spent the better of 2 hours with a set of rifling files cleaning them up.  on sale $3.
