15a fuse for main???
« on: May 14, 2011, 12:57:08 PM »
Hey guys I scored some sweet 12 ga wire all blk and all red and at one end of each is a encased 15a blade type mini fuse. Can I use this as my main between battery and ignition switch? Thanks guys or can the fuse be replaced with another fuse say a 20-30a one? The holder doesn't specify anything. Thanks

If you're talking about the type that can be purchased at the auto parts store, I have those for my bike. I think the advertise them as "waterproof.".  I got them because the PO had switched to blade fuses - but just exposed spade terminals with nothing to protect it from the elements.

I know one of the ones I got was rated for higher fuses. It was bulkier than the others. I used that for the largest (15A).

Maybe there is a number on yours you could look up to check the manufacturers rating on their site???

12ga is good for 20A as a rule. Having more than a 15A main is a bit risky, the harness wires can overheat severely with 20A should you have some sort of failure that doesn't quite blow the fuse.
