Do we have too many laws?
« on: May 14, 2011, 05:19:13 PM »
I could be wrong, but I feel we have too many laws in most countries.
The public is losing liberties at an alarming rate.
Is it just me?

I know that in Vermont there are too many laws that restrict using common sense
and was wondering what state in the USA is, in your opinion, best to live in.

Did you know that in Vermont you can be arrested for DWI if you are in your car,
in your driveway, with the car not running , the keys in the house,
after working on the thing all day in the hot sun and you sit down in the back seat
to have a beer?
Laugh at least once a day.
Life  $ucks, then you die.
You are entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts.
God forces us to live with  non-believers to test our resolve.

That's pretty ridiculous.  In California, as long as the keys are out of the ignition, you're in the clear.

We need a law restricting the number of laws we have.

Short answer: Yes
My Dad used to say that the purpose of government should not be to protect us from our own stupidity.

Only 1 issue with that blasbo, a person hurts themselves, goes to the er and skips on the bill.
I think we have too many laws and they are not enforced properly. I think it gives "law enforcement" too much power to use loop holes.
I do agree with laws such as abestos and lead, things like that, even smoking. I know people like to smoke and such so I do not think it needs complete outlawing, but I sure enjoy no smoking in restaurants.
But still, way too many laws. Drunk driving laws should be smarter and the punishments much worse.

The one law I'd like to see enacted would be the "Criminal Stupidity Law" examples would be, only one piece of toilette paper per dump, speeding through a school low speed zone, running over someone because you were texting, shaving, fixing your lipstick, whatever, shooting your self in the foot that type of thing, mind you the courts would be flooded in this day and age.

I tend to cringe whenever a new law is put on the books.  The reason being that they hardly ever take laws away once they are in place.  For example, there are laws that are clearly meant for a different time and place, but they are still on the books (sorry I can't think of an example off the top of my head, but I've heard of them before - maybe one of you knows of such a law...).

I'm not saying laws are bad - I just wish we didn't need some of the laws that pertain to people just using good common sense.  Like texting while driving and such.  Unfortunately, we can't rely on people using good judgement.  I see people texting all the time.  And of course, the one time I hear my phone buzz and glance at it is when I'll be the one who gets the ticket.   ::)

I guess the one exception I can think of is prohibition - the alcohol laws during the 1920's in the USA.  That was one law that was taken away.

Yes.

Unfortunately politicians are judged by how many new laws they've introduced, rather than what they've done to support the laws already in place or remove laws that do more harm than good.
The U.S. prison system is a multi- billion dollar industry.  $37 Billion in 2007.  And with large industries come lobbyists.

"The number of people in U.S. prisons has more than tripled in the past 17 years â€" from 500,000 in 1980 to 1.8 million in 1997. Today, more than five million people are behind bars, on parole, probation, or under other supervision by the criminal justice system. The state of California now spends more on prisons than on higher education, and over the past decade has built 19 prisons and only one branch university."

You could argue that the government/politicians don't want educated citizens, but rather more people under very strict control.

its against the law to shave a cat at midnight.
■A state law requires that a man's female companion shall call him "master" while out on a date. The law does not apply to married couples.
■In Zion, It is illegal for anyone to give cats, dogs, or other domesticated animals a lighted cigar.
■It is against the law to throw a ball at someone's head for fun.
■A license must be purchased before hanging clothes on a clothesline.
■A fine of $25 can be levied for flirting. This old law specifically prohibits men from turning around on any city street and looking "at a woman in that way." A second conviction for a crime of this magnitude calls for the violating male to be forced to wear a "pair of horse-blinders" wherever and whenever he goes outside for a stroll.
■In Carmel, A man cannot be seen in public while wearing a jacket and pants that do not match.
■In Greene, During a concert, it is illegal to eat peanuts and walk backwards on the sidewalks.
■In Ocean City, It is illegal to eat in the street in residential neighborhoods, and the only beverage you can drink on the beach is water in a clear plastic bottle.
■In Ocean City, It is illegal for men to go topless in the center of town.
■In Staten Island, You may only water your lawn if the hose is held in your hand.
■In Staten Island, It is illegal for a father to call his son a "faggot" or "queer" in an effort to curb "girlie behavior."

Texas- prospective atheist office holders beware:

Article 1 - BILL OF RIGHTS
Section 4 - RELIGIOUS TESTS

No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office, or public trust, in this State; nor shall any one be excluded from holding office on account of his religious sentiments, provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being.   :o

Just a few I found.

Oral sex is considered sodomy in Arkansas and is punishable.

If you live in Arkansas, you may not keep an alligator in your bathtub.

It's unlawful to walk your cow after 1:00 on Sundays.

There is an old law that states a man can beat his wife in Little Rock provided he does it with a stick no bigger than 3 inches across and not more than once a month.

As long as we have stupid people who can't control themselves we will get more laws.
As long as we have stupid people that can't control themselves,(and want goverment assitance), we will have people in suits,(lawyers), that will get elected to public office and make laws.
As long as we keep electing suits,(lawyers), to public office we will get more laws.

Anyone see a pattern here?

Speaking of senseless rules...
I'm only allowed to register 3 vehicles for parking where I work.  But I have 3 motorcycles alone, plus a Jeep.  Why this rule?  I can only drive one at a time, so I won't be taking up spaces.  Argh!

Gee, I thought Ann Arbor was bad. No vehicle washing in the street (drains go directly to the Huron River), but the driveway is OK... so far.

I love how the very folks who tend to feel like we have too many laws and hate being told what to do are passing laws AND constitutional amendments telling people what to do.

It's the same here.  ALL drains go directly to San Francisco Bay.

I'm guessing you have few level driveways in San Fran so the result is likely the same? Pretty level here in southern Michigan, I guess little of driveway run-off gets to the street.
