I can't wash my car in my driveway or on the street in the Bay Area...have to take it to a car wash.

Sometimes there are reasons for this.  In some places car washes recycle the water or the water is redirected to where it can be treated.  Often street drainage may go directly into the nearby water courses.  It helps keep down the level of phosphorus, oil, gas, etc out of the water system.  We all like clean water don't we?  Laws are not always passed just to make peoples lives difficult like some posters seem to hint at, sometimes there are very logical reasons even it's not obvious.

I have seen the effect of this first hand.  Minneapolis, known as the City of Lakes,  was having a problem with deteriorating water quality.  Street runoff drained directly into the lakes and I saw first hand over a period of 30 years how they all went to hell.  The city appropriated some of the parkland surrounding the lakes and created wetlands where the runoff was redirected for natural filtering before it hit the lakes and in a period of 10 years we have seen a dramatic increase in water quality.

Of course we had folks complaining about the new rules and laws or fighting the installation of the wetlands.

I actually agree with this law.  It makes sense to me, especially here in the enviro-friendly Bay Area.  I was using it more of an example of a restriction on day to day life.

Yes, too many laws!

Get this one?

Yeah, just what everyone needs is an unrealistic dildo, because by law in Dallas, it is illegal to own one that is realistic.

I've gotta say, I've never understood those types of laws, unless politicians are just worried the fake 'equipment' will put guys out of business. :P

Overall, yes.  Far too many.

Existing laws need to be enforced to the fullest, and if the public at large is outraged at the result, then the laws will be selectively eliminated by popular demand.
No more adding special new laws for popular special interests or recent news events either.

We do have too many laws, here in Canada the government either wants to tax it or legislate it to the point where the fun is removed. Its sad. The street racing laws here give the police way too much power. I agree you need some laws, but it's getting to the point of redundant stupidity.

Laws are a great thing in moderation, just to keep a lid on the jackasses out there who will do all kinds of stuff to other people just because they can get away with it.  My stance is that if everyone had a gun, the death toll would be real high for the first few years, but people would start treating others with a little more respect and a lot of the above laws would be meaningless.  'course it's also in my best interest to have a bunch of guaranteed business for the hospital I work for, but that's how lobbying goes. ;)

(And yes, the above is not to be taken seriously.)

Honestly, I think guns are like drugs, the people who want them already have them. I,t might seem like there are more at first, as probably more than a few folks would come out of the closet. The antis are always trying to shout down the "Castle doctrine" laws giving folks the right to shoot to kill someone breaking into their property, but in all the places where those laws have been enacted, there has been no appreciable increase of violence, nor crowds of vigilantes rampaging in the streets picking fights with gangstas..

Not so sure about that.  The citizens of Afghanistan have been armed to the teeth and lawless for generations.  How well has that worked for them over the last 100 years? ;D

Here are some for Texas.  I am sure glad the Blue Law is gone.  You could not buy socks on Sunday among a lot of other things.

One must acknowledge a supreme being before being able to hold public office.
It is illegal to sell ones eye.
When two trains meet each other at a railroad crossing, each shall come to a full stop, and neither shall proceed until the other has gone.
It is illegal to take more than three sips of beer at a time while standing.
Up to a felony charge can be levied for promoting the use of, or owning more than six dildos.
It is illegal for one to shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel.
It is illegal to milk another person’s cow.
A recently passed anticrime law requires criminals to give their victims 24 hours notice, either orally or in writing, and to explain the nature of the crime to be committed.
Homosexual behavior is a misdemeanor offense.
The entire Encyclopedia Britannica is banned in Texas because it contains a formula for making beer at home.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

These laws are still standing in Oregon...
Drivers must yield to pedestrians who are standing on the sidewalk.
One may not test their physical endurance while driving a car on a highway. (??)
Drivers may not pump their own gas.
A door on a car may not be left open longer than is necessary.
The “Peer Review Statute” prohibits you from finding out details of any written or oral discussion about your medical treatment.
Ice cream may not be eaten on Sundays.
It is illegal to buy or sell marijuana, but it is legal to smoke it on your own property.
and specifically for Portland:
Shoelaces must be tied while walking down the street.
You cannot wear roller skates in restrooms.
Persons may not pass through a “traffic congestion thoroughfare” more than twice per night.

...really?  It makes a person feel like legislators are graded by the number of new laws they put into effect...  ::)

oughta be a law to bring old laws to a vote and remove them if they no longer apply....and if they're voted off, actually remove them from the code...

Just do a search for stupid laws and you will find many.  My favorites; from this list:
http://www.vikarsrant.net/StupidCaliforniaLaws.htm

Chico, CA

    * Detonating a nuclear device within the city limits results in a $500 fine.

Who's going to argue with a glow-in-the-dark arresting officer?  And, how long will it be 'til the courthouse is rebuilt?

San Francisco, CA

    * Persons classified as "ugly" may not walk down any street.

Seems like a good enough reason to arrest anyone there, doesn't it?
Do you suppose it is a written requirement that their police officers run or crawl anywhere they go?  Or, do the "ugly" need not apply for the job.

Lloyd... (SOHC4 #11 Original Mail List)

You cannot wear roller skates in restrooms.

I bet the maker of that law was a fan of the movie The Warriors.   :D
