Okay, the new points seems to have cured the problem with the erratic flashing of the timing gun whether it was the root of the problem or not.
Idle timing is right on for 1.4 and 2.3, and advance timing is right on for 2.3, but advance for 1.4 looks way off. The two advance marks for 1.4, which as I understand are supposed to line up so that they are on either side of the timing mark, are way to the right of the timing mark. So...

I've read in other posts that I should set my advance timing to be right on, and accept the idle timing being a little off. Does this sound right?
