74 cb360 advice
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:26:53 PM »
Well  I picked up this bike a few days ago , just got a key to it , and am now wondering .....
Throw some gas in and crank her over ? After changing the oil first.
Bike was stored without fuel in it for the last 15 years or so.
Tank inside has an abundance of rust.So i think might use an alternate tank to try and start her.
Should i start looking for a new tank or is there a way of flushing all that rust out?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

 Graf.

In regard to cleaning the tank, there are a ton of threads on procedures to do it, ranging from the electrolysis method to chemical with either The Works toilet bowl cleaner (hydrochloric) or phosphoric acid (available at hardware stores).  Do some searching around, and good luck.

I did the electrolysis thing on my new Goldwing tank.  Worked great.  I used a piece of a noodle pool toy to create an insert for the gas fill hole in which to put the sacrificial anode.  It makes a nice insulator between the node and the tank.    I had planned on hanging a piece of ribar in there, but when I got to the home store, by the ribar was a piece of very thick wire that is used to wrap the ribar for shipping.  They let me take it.

Look for threads on the cam chain adjuster.   74 and 5 had bad ones and there was a recall on them.

My advice ??
Get it running and sell it before it breaks. Then buy a 350 or 450 if you're set on a twin of this vintage.
Top end parts are practically non-existent for 360's.

Not so fast...your bike may have already had the recall cam chain adjuster repaired. Look at the engine number and you should see 2 dimples between the CB360 and the actual number. The techs will make that dash (-) after the 360 look like a division sign with a dimple above and below the dash mark. Your bike is a clon of mine. The first pic is how I found mine in the back of a garage. The 2nd pic is how it looks now complete. It is a fun bike to ride. Click pic to enlarge it.

I enjoy mine.   Dont ride it as much as I used to as I have 3 running 650's now but for a few years it was my only ride.   Been across state over the continental divide several times.

When this was happening I was still working in a large shop - I can say for sure that many 360's just didn't get the proscribed punch marks after getting the replacements.
As I recall, flat rate on the task was maybe an hour at most, that's not a lot of time, so the punch marks got ignored many times..........

Correct...I heard those marks never got put on some bikes. I also heard some techs put the marks in front of the CB part of the engine number. Someone said they even found the marks on the frame steering stem. Now that is different.

If you got the dimple you should be set with the recall. Run it and enjoy it...many mechanics did not see the need for 2 dimples and just did one so they knew it was done. The 2 dimples was what Honda recommended, but many techs thought one was sufficient. The sad part is some of the shops did the recall, but failed to put in the dimples.

I regret selling mine all the time. I never had experience needing parts as it never needed any when I had it.

 It was a great commuter.
