guys, I'm feeling a bit challenged. I rebuild the motor (1st engine rebuilt) and it works!!! so I was feeling pretty confident.  funny how things change.  In rebuilding the clutch I first misplaced the spline washer (25mm).  Now I have new washer, clutch plates (6 reg/1 special) and have rebuilt it 6-7 times.  http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/clutch/cth1.htm has been a good resource.

The clutch is hanging up and no matter how I adjust the cable no luck.  ideas? Do i need to lube the plates..  are my torque values to high? It seems like I'm doing one small thing wrong.  BTW - I can start the bike in neutral and when I pull the clutch and engage first it kills the motor (too much engagement).

What did you torque the bolts at?

Did you let the plates soak in clean oil before you put it together? They will swell up a bit...

One of the more common problems I see when people are having trouble reassembling the clutch on a CB750 is misalignment of the splines of the pressure plate and the clutch center.  It is not obvious by looking at them but, there are four ways to put them together depending on how they are rotated, and only one or two will work properly.  It's easy to see when the parts are disassembled and on the bench.

This is how the pieces fit together:



Normally their respective splines mesh like this:



BUT you will find that if you rotate the clutch center by 90 degrees, the splines no longer line up properly:



Now, I don't know that this problem would cause your particular symptom, usually it's the opposite, the clutch won't grip because the pressure plate can't clamp down onto the plates:



Once you've found the orientation that works, mark one of the spring posts for future reference.  Magic marker for temporary marking, or dimple it with a center punch for permanent reference.



So again, don't know if this could cause your symptom or not but it's worth check, just to be sure.

Good pics mystic!!  If you don't align things correctly (teeth not aligned and engaged) and then tighten things up you will in all likelyhood crack one or more of the ears on the clutch lifter plate.   This would be a likely candidate for your issues.

Dude, I reassembled mine when I was tired one night and left the pressure plate off, clutch felt funny and did not engage.
Then I remembered that funny "extra" piece on my work bench and went back to re read my Clymers workshop manual.
I had left out the bearing pressure plate, it's only small and is easy to misplace/forget, it fits in the dead centre of the clutch basket and the thrust bearing sits inside it, without this wee marvel the whole lot is useless, so there might be one explanation.
I'll post a pic of mine so you can have a good laugh.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

huh. I'll need to try soaking the plates.  I think I've aligned the plates/basket correctly as engagement isn't a problem.  Issue is getting the clutch to disengage.  BTW - each one of your nailed one of my previous mis steps. :)  As I mentioned 6-7 builds at this point.
