used tire. should i use it? need advice.
« on: June 07, 2011, 03:12:18 PM »
i got this tire on a trade and was hoping to use it on 750. last night i noticed a small split. the rest of the tire is in good shape. no rot or cracks and plenty of tread. is it garbage? obviously, i would rather be safe.

Stick a fork in it, that tire is DONE! Tires in that condition I delegate to the burn out pit, smoke it till it pops!

What you need is some rubber cement to glue up the cracks, then it's good to go....

...to the morgue, that is.

How could you even ask the question?  ???

A used motorcycle tire is never a good trade regardless of its condition, IMO, unless you're only planning on making a tire swing out of it.

Not only that but what's the date code on that tire?! It looks ancient too...besides the cut/slit i'd say that thing is past it's prime anyways.

At first glance I thought that was a Frankenstein stitch in that split...

It looks like a "Side of the shed special"

In other words it sat next to the shed so whenever someone mowed the lawn it flung crap against the wheel and tire.

On a serious not as others have mentioned, if I have ANY doubt about a tire it does NOT get used. The slit could have been a fraction of that size and I wouldn't touch it. I have some tires at home that I got as new tires...that were too old to even think about using. Just because the tread is good doesn't mean the tire is still good either. Cracking doesn't always show up on an old tire until it's been through a few heat cycles.

Used tires are like used helmets, not worth it no matter how good the deal.

Worst advice ever!  That will just make the tread look older.  It obviously needs a coat of ArmorAll to soften up the tread rubber.

And then you can  :-* your goodbye.
