*formerly* stranded in pittsburgh
« on: May 17, 2011, 12:40:27 PM »
On way home from inspection...bike dies.  Thought it was the neutral switch bcause I was having problems with it...so I bypassed it by grounding in the bucket.  Seems like it'll run for 5 min and then die.  I've been riding in the rain all day....so electric short?  Can anyone help me troubleshoot?

Gas in all the float bowls and its not pissing out the overflow tubes.

Bright headlight.

Seems lime it might be dying when it gets hot?
any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Check for water under the points cover.  Keep it dry.

It looked lie there was some water under there in the inside of the cover but the points plate itself looked bone dry.  I dried out the water and put it back.  The screws were a little loose when I took it off.

There was kind of a badgrinding noise I thought whenit died last time.  I might have imagined it though in panic.  Ima try to start it again..

Thank you.

What bike?
Check the oil?
Won't turn over with kick start?
Good oil supply in the rocker area?

Do points often go in the rain?  This is the first problem I've had with them.
Thanks.

Any of that oil in the motor?  ;D
There are inspection caps at the top of the motor for adjusting the tappets...which are attached to the rockers.

75 cb550k....no airbox when bought...so pods.
My condolences.

Do points often go in the rain?  This is the first problem I've had with them.
The point cover seal is usually cork, one time use only, yet most try to reuse them.  That's ok when dry.  When water slips past the cover seal, the engine heat turns it to steam where it then condenses on the points, shorting them out.  Spark becomes iffy.

I make a neoprene gasket (seals way better, is reusable) for all my SOHC4s to keep water splashes out of the points area.

But, if you can't budge the engine with the kick start lever, you have other issues.  Like maybe cam oiling.

Sorry...yes there's oil but I do have a leak.
I can't remove the tappet covers....stuck on :-(
The kicker does turn it...but no joy.

I just got it to run for five minutes again and decided to make a run for it.  Got 20 ft and it started to die again..  but get this...I put my boot on the points cover and some power came back.  Off....lose power....on....power back.  Then it died again tho.  Im waiting for another run because this is a bad spot.  Ppl drive so crazy here.

Also...its the cork gasket but it was brand new.  There was no gasket at all when I got it.

If you get close to a store get some WD40 and spray points.

I'm not expert by far... but if its still raining with the pods and what not wouldn't the rain cause the fuel mixture to be god awful? If you don't mind running poorly could you just run it with a bit more choke so you can get to where you're going? .

worse comes to worse i read somewhere that Pittsburgh has a lot of bridges... maybe do some routine maintenance under a bridge till it clears? ;D

dont do that,if you have the cover off try your best to dry the contact surfaces of the points, open the points gently and blow and wipe with a dry rag if you have anything dry still, dry the inside of the cover ,get as much dampness out as you can, nothing worse than stuck in the rain man.

WD40 the WD is for water displacement. don't use oil. Pods will soak water thereby making it difficult for air to go through causing a fuel rich condition. Don't run with the choke on. A plugged exhaust will cause an engine to run a while and then die, check to be sure it's open, also a plugged gas cap vent hole.  Open the cap but keep the rain out close and test.

Someone had mentioned using the oil he had on the points, that is what we replied to. it's gone now.
