New here.. and to the scene..
« on: May 13, 2011, 10:09:43 PM »
Hi, my name is Kerry, I'm 28 yrs old and live in Kissimmee, Florida.. I've been riding for a little over 6 yrs combined.. I got in a real bad moto accident three years ago, but due to ever rising gas prices and the overwhelming urge to own another chopper/ bober I purchased my first CB I've owned a couple Hondas before but this is by far the oldest and kind of oddest.. It's a 1978 CB750A Hondamatic. Here's the pics:

It has brass knuckle footpegs and a brass knuckle suicide shifter:

It also has K&N pod filters on the carbs:

Now I want to explain that I am definitely NEW to the CB scene and want to take in anyone's info and advice on how to ensure this thing stay in daily rider status... It is my only source of transportation right now.. It's an unfinished project bike from someone else, but not much left I would assume before being 100% and starting to tackle personal preferences such as an actual seat! haha.

Things I know it needs immediately:
-- With the pod filters I was told to up the jets to 120's.. any thoughts on this?
It does have to get warmed up before it lets me kind of pull on the throttle or it will choke out
-- I need to purchase a front master cylinder rebuild kit for it.. How hard is it to rebuild?
-- If your sitting on the bike the second carb form your left leaks gas out of the overflow valve regardless of the petcock's position..
I've done some research on this and sounds like it's a stuck float valve needle, but don't know exactly what to do to find out for sure.. or even what to look for if I oull the carbs and start disassembling them..

Of course, as I said before, ANY and ALL help or guidance until I can get my hands on some shop manuals and start learning for myself would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you in advance for your time and patience! Ride safe!

Welcome to the Forum KNKLHED.  Choppers aren't my cup of tea, but it looks like your off to a good start.  That suicide shifter is interesting.  It would seem kind of dangerous on anything but an automatic.  I'm sure that some of the 750 guys can straighten you out on the carb issues.  Definitely need to do something about that seat!

Thanks. Yea the seats definitely in the works and I'm thinking of getting whichever one I get skinned in the monster energy drink green.. I've been a big fan of Ken Block for some time and really think I'm going to have the tank and fenders resprayed with a setup that looks a lot like his car.. Thats waaaaay down the road though as I want to make sure the bike can get me where I need to go safely first..

Looks cool to me! The master cylinder isnt hard to rebuild. Getting the circlip out is not fun but easy enough.
Sounds like the stand pipe in the carb bowl on #2 is cracked. Its repairable.
I guess your petcock could be messed up. Eventually the drip from #2 stops right?

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Yea it stops.. but it honestly seems like it only stops when it runs out of fuel.. I mean the other day my faf and I put about two gallons in it and when I camr back home about forty minutes later there was a HUGE spill underneath it about two feet wide and about 5 feet long.. thats a lot of drips.. and now ther's not enough gas in it to turn the motor over anymore! haha.. but it's cool because when I get it tagged this wednesday I'm dropping it off at my friends speed shop to have it completely gone through and fix whats up and a full tune.. ny the end of next weekend.. it should be 100%

Welcome aboard! I'm in Saint Cloud and can probably help sort some things out. My weekends are pretty well booked for the next month or so, but you never know what might be accomplished in a random evening...

Master cylinder rebuild isn't too bad, I've rebuilt mine a couple of times over the last 25 years (have I really had mine THAT long?). The overflowing carb would either be the float height, sticky float needle, or cracked overflow tube (least likely, but you never know without looking). The fact that it won't quit, even with the fuel valve in the off position indicates an internal leak in the petcock, where the fuel is leaking past the seal that is supposed to stop the fuel flow.

I think I saw your bike on the local craigslist, my old back won't let me even consider a hardtail. We'll have to take them for a spin once you get it back from the shop!

Yea! That would be cool for sure! My parents live in st. cloud so I'm over there quite a bit.. Yea I definitely need some help with working on the bike a bit.. more just direction and understanding of transferable parts.. I need a seat, tank and tail light.. the tail light i have is nice but I noticed it doesn't have a tag light and I dont want to get pulled over for it.. found the light need help mostly with the seat and tank.. it's a 2.6 gal I think and I want to go to like a 3.3 or a bit higher.. with a taller spine.. Message me your number if you'd like and maybe I can call you after the clinic calls me on the bike..

Yea I think it was on CG out of Daytona..

OMG!?! Guy at the clinic told me it's gonna be 900-1000$ to just flush the tank, rebuild?sync carbs and rebuild the front master cyclinder!! Does that sound right at all!?! That is outrageous!! He also told me the guy that built the bike did the rear brake setup wrong and the brake is binding so it would have to be rebuilt as well!! When I test rode the bike this wasnt evident at all! I ran and stopped just fine!! Wth!?!

Yeah, there's no way I could afford to drive my old bike if I had to pay a mechanic to do the work. I've been fortunate to be able to do all of my own work. If you want to get together and try to determine what might actually require a mechanics intervention then PM me your info and I'll try to get in touch with you this evening.

Now you know why most shops won't work on vintage bikes!  People won't pay what it takes to properly fix it and get mad at the shop when they expect to be reasonably paid for the work that needs to be done.  His price is NOT outrageous.  Your expectations are.  He's got at least 2 or 3 days of work ahead on your bike.  What's his shop rate?  He's gonna spend $200-$400 on materials your bike needs, + time.

If I couldn't or wouldn't work on my own bikes, I'd have new ones covered under warranty.  I couldn't afford to have someone else do the work for me.

Shop is in business to make money, their rate is anywhere from 70 to 90 per hour. TwoTired is close to the time estimate so the price is really not all that high.  A simple job like rebuilding a master cylinder should take an hour-on an old bike it may take an hour just to remove a rusted bolt so the shop has to give a high estimate.  You need to find a mechanic with vintage experience, maybe a post on CL...Larry
