LEAKING OIL HELP!!
« on: May 19, 2011, 06:19:08 PM »
so last season the splines on my shift shaft on my 71 cb500 stripped out so to last the last month and a half of the season i just tack welded the shift lever onto the shaft. not that much later did i start leaking oil out of my shift shaft hole on the left crank case which ended up on my chain which sprayed onto my rear tire = NOT good. i ordered up a new shift shaft, shift lever, shift shaft oil seal. last night i finished up changing everything, new shaft, lever and oil seal and put on a new clutch cover gasket. she started right up and ran great and shifted smoother than ever but when i pulled her into the garage i put a piece of tin foil under my bike to make sure it wasnt leaking. low and behold its still leaking big time right out of the shifter. i went back and looked at the blow up of the left crank case to make sure i wasnt missing anything and from what i saw i wasnt. i know theres a different little section on the case for where the oil pump is... does that get a gasket? there wasnt one on there that ive ever seen nor do i see one on a parts list. im just really frustrated at all this. i just wanna rideee. HELP ME!!

If in doubt you can make a gasket with some liquid gasket stuff, won't hurt and might help. But wait and see what the resident 500/550 guys say. :)

yeah thats my last resort...id hate to go and use some RTV and put it back together with that cuz my bike was covered in that crap when i first got her and i went back and replaced all the gaskets the right way lol.

what im wondering is there another oil seal on the shaft thats not way inside but more near the outside of the crank case?

Throw some baby powder in there to make sure that's where it's leaking from.

I had similar problems and it ended up being a different gasket under that cover.

i had assumed it was just a bad oil seal from the welding, but when i took the old seal out it looked fine. now i just have no idea where to start. idk if it could be coming from the oil pump or what. but the oil it literally leaking outside the hole that the shift shaft comes out of...i wish i had a pic, ill have to take one next time im at the garage.

what gasket? i didnt see any gaskets under the left cover, that was my first guess that i was missing a gasket that should be there but i never once have seen one under the left cover, not even where the oil pump is. idk if there should be a gasket there and its leaking oil from there over to my shift shaft and then coming out the hole and onto the shift lever/shaft

Check out the diagram in this thread.

Grab number 19 and two number 18's from the dealer.

That will probably do the trick.
