Anyone in Joplin? Or southern MO/NW Ark?
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:18:05 PM »
Still with us?

I just talked to friends in Eureka Springs.
Worst storm they'd ever seen. Scared the #$%* out of them but everyone is ok.

Wow, glad your family is ok, minus the house.

Jesus Christ! It took the bark off the trees!

I'm in NW arkansas. We have had some flooding but that fails in comparison to what hit Joplin. Sorry to see it.....

I haven't seen any footage yet, but it sounds terrible, best wishes to Boats and all the other people affected. Cheers, Terry.  :'(
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The one that came through Minneapolis missed me by 1/2 mile or less.  Heavy rain and sirens going off but we did not have much wind even that close.  It also had a very wide and long path of destruction but I don't think it was as powerful.  Many trees down, roofs blown off, and garages demolished but not the total devastation like in Joplin.

I'm about to be sending about 250 cots to Joplin from my work. I hope we don't get anything too crazy tonight.

Good to hear you are Ok Boats, I was about to mention you as the person to ask about the tornado that came through there.

That was one BAD tornado! I think the dead number went up to at least 123. wind speed was up close to 200mph. I've got a friend who lives in Joplin and she and her Dad got through okay, but that was no picnic. So sad. They say that the only SAFE place was in the ground!

Hard to comprehend the devastation in the news footage.  :( Until this event, the worst was, oddly enough, Flint, MI back in the fifties. Back then forecasting and warnings were pretty much non-existent. Do most homes in the Joplin area not have basements?

I heard today it was a multi-funnel tornado, perhaps as many as three separate vortices within what appeared to radar to be one large funnel. I would think the shearing affect between the three to magnify the damage capability.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Seriously? Come on man..... we got our power back on 2day, and bought a few groceries a few hours ago. Before we got back home power was off again and sirens were wailing. At least we have sirens again. It was back into the closet with the animals again. Seems clear now but tornado watch till 3 am. I feel for the ones that lost everything and now are in fear again.

There are about five watch boxes around Ft Smith right now, same stuff that dropped a few funnels uncomfortably close.

So calm and sunny today, you'd never guess about the e vents of last night.

Heard about several tornadoes in the area of Oklahoma and further into Arkansas (past us). Really sad about the losses over the past few days. Fortunately for us, we only got some heavy rain, some pretty bad winds and the inconvenience of staying in the bathroom for over an hour (some had longer stays that that). Some look at the sirens as an aggravation, but with the way those tornadoes can form and drop down so quickly, I'd rather be safe than sorry. My Prayers go out to those affected by the tornadoes and especially the Joplin area.
