new member, new bike, new questions!! lol
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:12:01 PM »
Hey guys, ima new member and jus bought a 76 cb550 "bobber".  Hope those arent frowned upon here.  lol.  Everytime I call someone to ask about parts they ask whether its an F or K model.  When I tell them I dont kno, they say to look on the VIN.  When I tell them there is no f or K n the VIN they say it has to have one.  But my bike has no letter in the VIN, whether it b on the VIN plate, or stamped n the frame.  Please help me in identifyin my bike so I can tell these guys what I have.  Thanks and I look forward to meetin all you bike lovers.

Yes, the VIN number on the frame should have an F or a K in it to tell you which version you have.

im pretty sure that the k is a 4 into 2 exhaust, and the f is a 4 into 1. of course that will only help you if the person who bopperified it didnt change your exhaust.

You should check the model guide on the website (a bit slow right now, sorry):

http://www.sohc4.net/index.php/cb550/cb550-model-guide

The K bikes did not have a 'K' in the VIN.  The F bikes had an 'F', so if you have no letter, your bike is a K.  If you are looking for engine parts, check the engine number against the model guide since engine swaps are really common on the SOHC/4 bikes.  However, except for a few changes (carbs mostly) between the 74-76 and 77-78 model years, there really weren't many engine changes even between the F and K models.

Photos aren't hard, and there are instructions in the Help menu on the nav bar. Look at the "Attachments and other options" below the reply message box. When you click on that, you can follow the steps which are routine.

You looked at the tag on the frame or the number on the engine?

hey guys thanks for the info.  The number on the tag and the number stamped n the frame r the same and neither hav a letter after cb550.  So that makes it a K model rite?  I am mainlt lookin for a front caliper and left switch assembly.  My bike was stripped of everything but a headlight and tailight.  And it only has rear brakes.  but Im gonna put front brakes and a few other safety items on it.  Ill try to get some pics posted soon as i figure it out.  lol.  thanks again

First off, welcome!

Does your side stand seem farther forward than normal? If yes, it's a K.

On the F model, a 4 into 1 exhaut was stock.

Check eBay for parts, you'll find everything you need.

Pretty sure the front brake assemb is the same for all 550/500 models of all years (except Nighthawk) and the left control will be year and model dependant although you could reconfigure the wiring without too many problems. I put a 77 right control on my 76 K without too much monkeying around. Works great.
