Forks of the Credit is closed until about November
« on: August 27, 2010, 06:19:22 PM »
I don't know if anyone has posted about this, but a very nice ride through the Caledon area north of Toronto from Hwy 10 through to Belfountain is closed for road maintenance, until at least November apparently. Too bad with the fall colors coming. I wonder what the double twist up the escarpment will be like when they are finished....

I went thru Ballinafad in the car today, thinking that I would see how they were doing with the construction on the Forks road. It is still closed.

I noticed also that there are "No Motorcycle Parking" signs now on the main street near the coffee shop that was very popular with the biker set. Also, "No smoking in this parking lot" posted at the lot across the street. Is it possible that the village has become biker unfriendly? At times in the summer, there might be a hundred people and their bikes stopped there.

We are planning to do a ride around lake Erie next year. Start in Cleveland, Ohio and take mostly the non-freeway interstate type roads to circumnavigate the shores of Lake Erie. Probably make a three day ride out of it. Either camping or maybe B&B's along the way. Any suggestions from our northern neighbors?

Hi there myhondas

There is a thread called "Ontario Riders" where a bunch of us in the area are discussing places to ride next year. This is a new thing I gather and most of us have never met. There are a few ideas for good routes being kicked around and some ideas for good eateries and places to stay. You might want to join in the discussion, or at least monitor?

Thirty years ago that was a nice ride, I lived in Scarborough at the time. Now that I live in Shelburne, which is much closer I've found that there are far too many bikes and cars travelling around those roads..I've found you spend more energy not getting swiped by other bikes or cars coming around some of the hairpin turns or swerving around the hikers and, or,dog walkers.
Granted the scenery and roads are nice but it's way too popular now.

Does anyone know if Forks is open? Is construction finished? What did they do to the switchbacks?

I rode through today which was only possible because they are not working over the weekend. It is much the same, including the switchback by the old railroad tracks. It looks like most of the construction effort has been on a new bridge at the bottom, new safety railings and a new blacktop all the way up the hill. There is old pavement from the top into Bellfountain but it looks as if they are going to do that part as well. The signs warn that the road is closed every day from 7am to 6pm but that seems to be only on the weekdays. It's sure taking a long time. I think it has been closed for a year and a half now?
