mixed up starter relay
« on: May 23, 2011, 12:33:53 PM »
I have spent years trying to figure out a charging problem on my cb 500 (and I've read almost everything here in the forum to try and figure it out). Today I was replacing some of the wiring multi connectors and while I was in there I started staring at my starter relay which I had to replace years ago when it failed. So now I see that I was sold a relay to a 750. The big difference is that the 500 has a red/yellow lead to the start button and a black lead various other bits (stop switch, idiot lights etc). The 750 on the other hand has a red/yellow to the start button and a green/red lead to the clutch switch. Now, I can't remember what I was thinking at the time when I replaced it but I it looks like I connected the red/yellow lead from the starter to my black lead and left the green/red unhooked. One of the reasons that I think I did this is because the red/yellow lead out was a male end and the receiving end was also a male. The black receiving end however was a female which explains why I plugged it in there. (Yes I know, but I've learned so much more since then) Having said all that the starter button works and all the lights work. Basically the bike runs fine except it doesn't charge. Again I can't remember if this was when my charging problem started but I will guess and say that I don't think so as that particular problem was a more recent thing.
So now to the point: Are the red/yellow and green/red lead coming out of the relay be interchangable?

Might help to understand how the solenoid works.

Two big posts will pass current between them when the unit is activated.
The two small wires, regardless of color, attach to a coil of wire inside, arranged in the form of and electromagnet.  When power is placed on those small wires, the magnet is energize and big shorting bar moves into position between those two big posts.

Solenoids with the black wire expect to be powered with + 12v on that wire, and ground, or more correctly Battery NEG, on the other to energize.

The little coil in the solenoid doesn't care how the circuit loop from/to battery is completed to energize.  The circuit interrupter can be in the POS path or NEG path, to allow the solenoid to activate/deactivate.
Anyway, the wire colors match the year and model of the bike, but the solenoid still functions when power is applied across the small wires whatever their colors.

I don't see how this could effect you charging issues.  Just how much of the bike wiring has been customized/altered?

Nothing else on the harness has been modified. The black wire I refered to was one of the small wires on the solenoid not the black battery NEG. The charging problem I realize is anther thing entirely which is why I was going through the harness cleaning all the connectors and in some cases replacing the some of the multi connectors. I guess what I'm asking is are the two small wires on the same on the two relays and can I put the green/red wire into the black wire on my harness.
thanks in advance

The small solenoid wires go to an electromagnet coil. If the thing works as you've wired it then the coil is not wrong, and which wire is "+" probably doesn't matter anyway.

OK forget about your starter move on to your charging issue.
