What years engine guards interchange? 77,78
« on: May 31, 2011, 04:39:00 AM »
I really like the engine guard/highway bars on my 78 CB750K, but they are pretty rusty. I've found several new on the internet, including one that says fits 77 only. It was my understanding that 77 and 78 were near identical, and realyl, unless the engine case, frame or exhaust position changed, I would think that most would be the same. At around $100, I think it would be cheaper to replace than to rechrome. They all look about the same, it's hard to tell, even with a good picture. Anyone with more experience than me, your opinion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

No help? I know there are plenty of people here that would know the answer in their sleep, even if they never fitted a set of highway bars.

Yes, you are correct, the 77 & 78 are nearly identical. Although I never fitted them [or would] I bet it would fit.

Good Luck.

FYI - I have a 78K and a 77K parts bike. I too had rusty engine guards on the 78K and the PO had dropped the bike, so they were visibly scraped up. I took the engine guards off the 77, cleaned them up and painted them black. When I went to attach them to the 78, the mounting holes did not fit so I sold the 77 bars on Ebay to fit a 77.

Mucho grazias, that's very good to know.
I guess I'll go with replating, that is the safest route, then I'm absolutely certain it will fit, good excuse to do a couple other parts, too.
