That sounds like standard advice for any used part.
I would never use ebay kits.  I just dont like the fit and finish, nor the materials.

Always buy OEM seals.
The calipers are normally marked 30 or 32 mm.

And yes, the pistons are different front and rear, another thing that would show up when using OEM parts, or researching them before buying aftermarket ones.

I have two sets of calipers that could be used for the conversion listed here in the "for sale section"
Figured some might want to try the swap out.

I´m on the lookout for a cost efficient upgrade to my stock F2 brakes, and the twin piston calipers and a set of braided brakes lines seems to be an easy and reasonably priced upgrade.
I already sourced a pair of brake caliper brackets from an ´82 CB 900 F, but I´m still searching for the matching calipers.

CB 900 F/ CB 750 F twin piston calipers seems very hard to come by (US is out of the question due to shipping prices and customs).

Using partsfish I don´t have that many other options, but it still seems to me that a lot of the twin piston calipers from 80´s Hondas shares the same caliper design.

So, does anybody in here know if I for instance can use the calipers from a GL1200, or VF 750 F - the design seem very close at first glance?!?

I would have to double check but im pretty sure 81-83 gl1100 calipers will work. A s trying to source these for my f2 until i bought my 550. Now the 550 had taken precedence

Yes, MANY of the 80s calipers have the same mounting pattern and will bolt on.
Brackets are the hard part!

Thanks:

Looking at this picture doesn´t it seems that the GL1200 caliper is more or less identical, when you remove the bracket:

Yup, safe bet that the caliper will work.
Bracket, not so much

Nice!
I already have a set of brackets from a CB 900 F2, so they are not a concern  :)

Generally when I make up a kit to do this swap I buy calipers off a latter bike.  They seem to be much cheaper.

I should make up a few "kits" for people on the forum.

There kinda is...I'm planning on taking the forks off of a 79 or 80 750F since they are still 35mm diameter, and retrofitting the brackets and calipers outlined here.   I've got the wheel/rotor too just in case the stock 550 wheel/rotor won't fit (probably won't).

I don't know of any fully "bolt on" ways to mount a wire wheel in mag wheel forks.

Hey awesome upgrade!

Im building on a 1977 CB750F2 and as I bought it, it had no brakes (I think the previous owner tried to get them working again).

So i'm looking for a good way to get some brakes on it (since the original brakes are really hard to find).

Does your upgrade double Zylinder brakes work on my Bike?

Its my first built so i need a Little help here and there.

Thanks a lot

Noah

Very glad to find this upgrade.  Would a 75 CB750F be any different?

Yes 75-75 F bikes use a swinging caliper, much like the K bikes.
I'm sure the K bike dual disk upgrade could be made to work on an F bike.

OK thanks.  Good to know.  I have a 75 that someone already added the second rotor to however they didn't complete the job with the two calipers and lines.

I now know there is a fairly easy solution.  Mmmmm, I even have a 1982 900C sitting beside it in the shed!

I wish there was an upgrade like this for my 1977 CB550F :(

Did your upgrade work FastBroshi?  Unless the later forks have increased diameter you could buy a set of the 750F2 fork bottoms and use them on a CB550 and then you could use the dual piston caliper. Right?
But, then you need to solve the wheel issue unless you want to put a Comstar on your CB550. Then the rotor is probably going to be a different dish to locate it in the correct location.
Going to CB750 triples and forks ends up giving you fork tubes that are too long and the fork tubes would be proud of the top of the triple trees to maintain the 550 handling...but that is if the amount of rake would be different on the 750F 77-78.
Soon it gets expensive with custom parts.  Or impossible.

Any reason this would not work work would not be a good idea?

Would using the internals from a CB550 or fitting a RaceTech gold emulators and springs and the like be the way to go?

Then you get the improved braking and the improved suspension.
The axle diameters are the same, right?
If they are not, then can you find a bearing to work with the increased axle diameter?

Are the fender mounts the same spacing on the CB750? If so, then it is a bolt up situation. Otherwise, that would need to be addressed in addition...
Does it become as expensive as machining a hub and bearing spacers used on a GSXR front end or R6 front end?  Plus the cost of the said forks.

Any reason this would not work?

I think the GL500I brackets are the same. They look identical to the short brackets shown for the CB750F2 that people are looking for. If they are the same, then that adds two more bikes to find the Right Caliper bracket from.
The GL500I calipers are 30mm pistons.  The right caliper from a GL500I can be used on the rear for the rear caliper upgrade.

'82 and up GL500I (Silverwing Interstate) used these same twin piston calipers and the short caliper mounting bracket needed for the F front forks. There are two variants of the caliper mounting brackets for the front forks. The shorter one is needed for the CB750F bikes and it is the same as used on the GL500I models for '82-83...
The '82-83 GL500I had twin piston dual front calipers and rotors, the GL500 only had the left dual piston caliper.

The HH pads are worth the upgrade in better braking performance and feel with these dual piston calipers. Naturally best used with a good set of stainless steel braided brake lines so your brakes are firm and not squishy.

Wanted to point out that the rare short bracket for right and left twin piston calipers mentioned in this upgrade are used in the '82-'83 GL500I (not the GL500, it only used the left caliper.)

I've actually gathered quite a few parts from '79-80 750Fs.  Yeah I'll end up with mismatched wheels but so what.  I might black out the wheels to minimize that.   I gathered all these parts a while back, then life got way more complicated.  Don't have near as much time for bikes now.

Hell, my always reliable VFR actually managed to plug its jets after sitting for a while.  So now I've got to address that.  Thankfully its carbs were pretty easy to take off.  Childsplay compared to the 550.

I don't know of any fully "bolt on" ways to mount a wire wheel in mag wheel forks.

I know of one way, but you lose the dual disc. There is a model of 1979-1982 cb750K bike that uses a wire wheel compatible with the dual piston caliper:

the problem is that the backside of the wheel doesn't have a surface to mount a disc even if you drilled through the wheel:

So if you had a K bike with a single brake and you wanted to upgrade to a better single brake without losing a wire wheel you could use a 1977-78 F front end (Forks, trees, axle, etc), the left side 1981-82 dual piston caliper, and this 79-82 cb750K wire wheel and spacers and (might have to mix and match spacers with 77-78F setup) and end up with better braking. Is it as good as dual discs? no I don't think so, but it is better than a swing caliper single puck.

and just to give you an idea as to how rare this wheel is, these are the only models that used this front wheel that is compatible with the later dual piston caliper:

    1979 CB750K A - FRONT WHEEL
    1980 CB650 A - FRONT WHEEL
    1980 CB750K A - FRONT WHEEL
    1981 CB650 A - FRONT WHEEL
    1981 CB750K A - FRONT WHEEL
    1982 CB650 A - FRONT WHEEL
    1982 CB750K A - FRONT WHEEL
