Castellated clutch nut removal
« on: May 25, 2011, 11:33:56 AM »
Righto, now I'm getting stuck into my project and, like someone said somewhere "an old motorbike is like a box of chocolates..."  Apart from two scored cylinders from broken rings and two snapped exhaust studs (any tips and/or ideas welcome), I've now got to the clutch removal bit.  I've got the tool to fit the nut but will it move?  Nowt.  So before I try anything of my own invention does anyone have the knack to this, namely, how to hold the centre from turning?  ???

Cheers, Mick.

If the engine is still in the bike, you can stick a broomstick through the rear spokes and put it in gear to hold things still. If not, you can hold the crankshaft still with a wrench on the alternator nut on the other side.

Thanks for that. The problem is that the recessed centre plate that the nut is in spins as I turn the nut, not the entire clutch assembly.  i've just thought - should I put back the four bolts?

Cheers, mick.

Oh, gotcha: yep, the bolts and springs must be reinstalled, and the plates. Add some washers where the top plate is missing. Be sure to tighten them evenly, not lopsided: it can break out the post on the clutch hub if you tighten just one side down at a time. ;)

REgarding your broken exhaust studs, try taking it to a qualified welder to weld a bolt onto whatever is left of the studs.  The heat from welding should break loose any corrosion that is holding them fixed, and will allow you to unscrew them.

Thanks for the help folks - I knew there was something not quite right!  The thing still won't move though, the clutch slips.  i've left penetrating oil on it and I'll have another go at weekend.  Aaargh!!!!  >:(
