While we are on the subject...I just pulled the trigger on Wiseco pistons.  What is the clearance for those forged ones? .002?

Please note a detail: that is 0.0020" clearance of the skirts as measured 0.5" up from their bottom! Otherwise it is 0.0025" if measured at the end of the skirt, but this varies more.

You got me worried. I didn't give my machinist any more details than "0.0008-0.0010" on my cast pistons. He's a bike shop, so maybe he knew where to measure, but I didn't specify...

It'll be fine mate, the cast pistons don't need the same clearances as forged. ALL pistons are measured by the machinist at the lower end of the skirt when he bores your cylinders, don't forget that he does this for a living. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'm getting ready to pull my K8 motor, after spending dozens of hours pouring over the Hondaman Bible, and wondering if the '69 - 76' kits will work in my '78 motor. If not, does anyone have an idea if/when the later model kits will be available? My thanks to everyone for this thread full of useful info!

They work for me:

 8)

You give up a little compression by switching from the slightly domed K8 stock piston to the flat top piston, but you get most of it back as a result of the overbore so you end up pretty much back at stock compression. This is good if you are not tearing into the bottom end yet since higher compression pistons usually dictate stronger connecting rods.  :)

Like ^^ they said, it will be fine in the K engine. It is actually OK in the F2/3 engine if you don't mind dropping the compression ratio a bit: the OEM in the F3, for example, was 9.2:1 CR, and if you mill 0.040" (1mm) from the head with the 836 CI pistons, it comes in at 9.02:1, which is about where the K0-K6 engines are, stock.

If you use the DOHC750 pistons (1979-1982) with the shoulders trimmed down 1.5mm, for 12mm in from the outer edge (w/o milling the head), it comes in at about 9.2:1 CR at 760cc. This works fine, too. If you use these pistons in the K7-8 engine, the CR is about 9.8:1, requiring premium-fuel--only operation. On these, I have added some extra quench band width and done other things, like trimming back the chamber near the valves to improve flow anyway, to augment the chambers a little bit. This ends up requiring you "CC" the chambers afterward to make sure they are close in size to each other, though, a messy thing to have to do...

Thanks for the advice, fellas! Kit is on the way. I need to get organized and figure out what else I need in the way of gaskets and studs. Hondaman, you may have a head coming to you for rebuild soon. Will know more in the coming weeks once I get the engine out.

Time to wake this thread up from the dead!

I have been searching for Cruzinimage cheap stock pistons but could not find any on any of their eBay accounts.

I finally found their homepage where they have 836 pistons, stock pistons and OS ones and CB bike parts in general.
CB750 K0-K6 as well as the later K7-8 and F bikes (392 pistons) which can jump up the CR a little when using thick head gasket on an earlier bike.

Difficult to resist stock +0.5mm piston kit and a clutch for my projects, ongoing and future. :)
Good, quick and friendly service!  ;D

A little cheaper yet......not sure what they are....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB750-750K-69-78-836cc-65mm-Big-Bore-Piston-Kit-Brand-New-Set/112836449748?hash=item1a459395d4:g:xYwAAOSwx-9Wvl63

They appear to be the CI pistons without the head gasket. If you get the CI 'kit' it comes with a good head gasket for about $10 more.

That cheaper kit is shipped from US so you guys in USA will not pay any customs and VAT.
These really low priced pistons make me to search for a proper cheap cylinder.... :)

I already have a not much used 836 kit without cylinder. The old cylinder was worn, now bored to a new 849 kit I found cheap on eBay.

Are you going to install larger sleeves for the 849 pistons? I once violated that "max bore size" on a CL72 engine with +3mm cast pistons (because the owner wanted it in a hurry, and brought the pistons - my 'disclaimer' didn't matter to him). He got almost 8 miles on the new engine before the sleeves fractured below the cylinders, breaking one of the pistons and laying down about 40 feet of locked-rear-wheel tire mark on the pavement... :(

I would normally not do that (and haven't before nor since), but he was my boss at work at the time...

In the CL72 the max bore size is +2mm over stock.

My old 836 cylinder is done for the 849 kit. Not much more to bore, it was rather worn before. Piston/bore clearance was 0.2mm. Same old sleeves.

The guy that bored it worried about cracked sleeves he carefully inspected before doing it, but it worked out well.
Even 836 means thin sleeves.
