Topic: Timing for 1978 CB550

I am attempting to set my timing with an alligator clip wire and 12v light. I thought close was close enough until last night. My gap is .14 and cylinders 1/4 seem to be dead on. I cannot seem to ever get 2/3 right. When I am slightly advanced, she "coughs"on 2 and when I am retarded the cough goes to 3. No serious booming backfire, just a cough and resulting loss of power.
My question - what should I be using for greater accuracy? Is close, (withing a line width or two) close enough?

You could use a dynamic timing light for more "accuracy" or to train yourself to static time more precisely.
