Do not buy the Troy-Built! I've had nothing but trouble with them. Junk!

I work at a Home Depot.  Most all the contractor types use Echo or Stihl.  I have an Echo, works great and has a 5 year warranty...Larry

Stihl was always my favorite. I bought a weed whacker about a year ago that I'm not too impressed with. I can't think of the name, but it was a cheap one at Low's. I like that it's a two stroke and I haven't had much problems with it to speak of, but it's just way too short. I have to bend down a bit to use it, so after a couple hours with it my back gets sore. Check the length before you buy.

Get a Stihl.

I've got a Stihl weed trimmer, leaf blower and chain saw.  They were a bit more than some of the others, but after several years of use from each, they've all been well worth it.  They're damn near bullet proof compared to the other brands I've owned (Ryobi, Poulan).  I think this is one of those cases you get what you pay for.

i'm partial to Echo and have five pieces.   for a four stroke i think your best bet is the Honda.  not cheap though.
honestly, i felt they were a bit on the heavy side, lacked the string cutting of a high RPM two stroke but were the better of the breed for blade work due to the lower RPM power curve.  not sure the noise level of the four strokes are worth consideration.   do not buy Ryobi, Poulan or any of the big box price point machines.  get something with a servicing dealer behind it.

I have a 2-stroke Husqvarna weed-eater.
It's about four years old and works like a champ.  Even after sitting all winter it starts with two or three pulls.
I've put hours and hours on it and I've never even had to change the plug.

I also have a Husqvarna chain saw that I have used to slice and dice many an oak tree and it runs like a top.

I have the Troy Bilt and I love it.  The secret is to adjust the valves regularly.  I also maintain one for a friend.  They both start first pull most of the time, second pull guaranteed.

I have a Ryobi 2 stroke weedwacker I bought at a garage sale for $20. After 4 years I finally had to tune it up.

I have  Troy-bilt lawnmower with a Honda motor that is awesome. I put it together from the box, put oil and gas in it and first pull it started right up. Couldn't believe it. Smooth and quiet. You cna't beat a honda for 4 stroke reliability.

I bought a Poulan Pro from the local hardware store.
Even though I know it would have been cheaper at HOme depo/Lowes etc
felt if I ever need it serviced I could have it done locally.

The big box stores around here don't service what they sell.

The Poulan is going on its 2nd year without problems. I like that
there are tons of attachments which can be added at a reasonable price.

I know a lot of people don't like Poulan, but I got a cheap Poulan trimmer ten years ago, and I've never had the slightest problem with it.  Still going strong and I've never done a thing to it except put in fuel, and it starts up every mowing season just like it did when brand new.

I'm a landscaper and run a maintence crew. We use a 2 stroke husquvarna (sp?) and it always starts with a couple of pulls, never bogs down and runs like a champ. And as you can imagine, we abuse these things. I would avoid Troy bilt and I'm not a fan of echo. Stihl is pretty good bu husq make a nice string trimmer. I think Lowes sells them for about $200.

Just my .02.

The problem with Stihl is they that don't allow most places to sell parts.  A lot of web sites have it so you can look up what parts you need like at a parts counterman can.  Nice machines, but you can't look up your own parts.

I have a Troy built gas trimmer.  That has been the biggest POS. The clutch rattles and wears out the plastic to where it keeps popping off.  I have replaced all those parts and within a time or two of usage it was back doing the same thing.  Their support is horrendous.

It is hardest thing I have had to start.  The wife still can't get it started.  It has been that way since new.

The tiller attachment?  If you want you Troy built trimmer to survive, NEVER add this attachment.

The trimmer cord attachment always fails and hardly works right.

I will never own another Troy Built in my life.

Next one will be a Honda!  Hell yea!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I have a stihl chainsaw that has been heavily used for around17 years and a stihl weed eater {FS108} and both are tough and ALWAYS work. The only other brand i have used and was pretty good as well was a Homelite chainsaw, i still have it and it has copped a real flogging, it still goes.....Its also a US brand......Any one else used Homelite stuff..?

my mate next door had an old homelite saw,,it worked well,,i did a few repairs on it,,then it lost spark and we couldnt get another coil for it,ive got a little sachs saw thats a demon(bit souped up)and an old big stihll thats a bigger demon(a bit more souped up)years ago my mates dad had an old canadien saw without one piece of plastic on it,thumb oil pump,it sounded like a bultaco with a heavy flywheel,i still like the two stroke weed wackers,i think they spin faster, some of the cheap new ones have non adjustable jet screws,or a funny recessed one requireing a special tool,so when they run bad they stay bad.
