cb550K seat vs. cb550F seat
« on: July 13, 2007, 07:15:12 AM »
gents,

Would anyone know with certainty if these 2 seats are interchangable between the K & F model cb550s?

Would a K model seat fit on a F model and vice versa?

Thanks

The seat pans are different.  They will not interchange.  I've tried.  I have both the K (Cassandra) and the F (Jasper) sitting in my garage.  I cannot switch out the seats without modification....  Now, if you want to make some modifications, they will interchange...

or if you get a good K seat and want to put it on the F, you can take the padding/foam and leather/vinyl off and put it on the seat pan of the F, if you do not want to modify your bike.... and vice versa, if you get a good F seat and want to put it on the K, you can take the padding/foam and leather/vinyl off and put it on the seat pan of the F

My understanding of the 2 models is based on model year and gas tank design. The early models thru 1976 will not fit a 77-78 correctly. Also, the "F" tank is different from the "K" tank, so the fit on the front of the seat (against the tank) is different. Hope this helps?

Thanks guys.. definately been a great help!!..
I guess I should explain why Im asking...

Basically, I plan to put a 1975 cb750f tank on my 195 cb550f bike.
the cb750f tank is a bit longer by 2 inches.
I need a cb550 seat pan to build a matching cafe racer seat.

I know that the stock cb550f seat pan will need to be cut by 2 inches in the front to accomodate the bigger tank, which Im willing to do a donor seat pan, and not to my current seat.

I guess Im asking if the hinges and plunger lock would line up exactly the same on a K seat and an F seat.

Considering Im gonna cut 2 inches off the front of the seat pan, the lenght doesnt matter.

Thanks for all the comments!!

My experience is that the hinges and lock are the same.  I just converted a 75F seat to a 78k.  The hardware lines up.  The thing to think about is if the back of the seat ends up in the correct position for you.  My 75 seat was just a little shorter than my 78, but the difference was all at the back of the seat.  My fender is not considerably more exposed as a result (probably 3in more).  I really like shorter look, but I'm not sure what you are going for.

thanks so much...
So basically, If I dont care about theback or front of the seat, the hinges and plunger lock of a "K" seat will line up fine on a "F" frame...

THanks a million!!

Here is what I plan to do with the stock seat cb550 seat but chop the front 2 inches to accomdate a longer cb750f tank..
