i hate posting threads like this and i like to read up and find info on it but i can not figure out for the life of me the name of the things i want to look up or how it works.

my family does not have any motorcycle experience but do have car experience.

when i purchased my motorcycle i could not figure out how the set up worked under my gas tank. or if there should be electrical tape holding 2 wires together......



from what i can put together is that the points on the side of the engine is like the distributor cap> the twinkie things are like coils > then you have wires > spark plug caps > spark plugs

what i dont understand is that why is the lead wires coming out of the twinkie thing electrical taped to new wires and then spark plug caps?

was my previous owner to cheap to replace the twinkie things and instead just electical taped new wires and spark plug caps?

They are called ignition coils, and it sounds like someone did a crappy job of replacing the plug wires.

Yeah, those are your coils (twinkie things), and the tape is a botch job to install newer wires.  The plug wires on these coils are integrated, so you can't just swap them out.  Instead, you have to replace the entire coil assembly.  Some owners cut off the wires with a small section left to splice into a fresh wire using an engineered splicing unit.  Some (like me) just slice the coil open, splice in a new wire, and then fill the hole with high temp epoxy.  Your PO apparently took a different route.  Not necessarily a non-functioning route, but it doesn't sound like a long term solution to me.

they dont sell these coil packs anymore do they?

do they have after market coils?

A lot of people like Dyna coils, that's the only brand name I really know about.  I'm gonna buy 'em from z1enterprises, as they're a little cheaper there than anywhere else I've found.  I think it's about 165 with wires and caps.

holly batman ?!?!?!?!..... maybe ill try boring out my old coils and replacing the wires internally and then re-sealing it like stated above.

is their any way to test my coils to see if they are still in spec? i do have a multimeter that i have no idea how to use but bought it to look cool. still have the instruction manual so i should be good given the spec sheet for them if anyone has one or knows the #'s

XS I have used these they work fine no leaks look around Z1 for wires caps they also have 5ohm coils with removable wires.

ya u might get those if i dont drill out the coils.

also how to you test or know if your coils are still in spec?

If you don't have a shop manual for your bike, I would suggest finding it on this forum and downloading it.  It has instructions for testing the coils.
