k1 stiff throttle help
« on: May 27, 2011, 04:44:18 PM »
hey guys have had a stiff throttle problem since ive owned the bike. its a k1 750 and i installed GSXR controls with the stock pull cable no push cable. the throttle snaps back really strong more that most later 750's ive riden but its twice as stiff to twist. ive lubed the carb rack has new cable and made sure its routed with very little bends and large ones going to the carbs. ive heard the early bikes tend to be stiff but mine kills my hand even riding for 5 min. need some help thought about going to a softer spring.
also what does the rubber around the return spring do?
thanks ryan

I've got the same issue with a K4. It looks like a heavier spring than my K6- were there changes in the springs across the K's? Anxious to see what responses you get. It gets irritating pretty quickly.

If by "twice as stiff to twist", you mean you changed the twist grip, and nothing else, and its twice as stiff to twist as it was with the original stock twist grip?

If so then you have inadvertently installed a quick throttle. I would suspect that the GSXR is certainly a quick throttle. That means it takes less of a turn of the grip to pull the throttles wide open. That also means you lose leverage and the effort will be increased proportionately.

Did you just change the twistgrip (and maybe the cable) but nothing else? Its the same spring as before?

PS: I prefer the quick throttle. So bulk up your arm.  ;D
PPS: the rubber on the spring is to keep it from vibrating I think, though I don't know why. Otherwise its like the rubber sheath on the centerstand spring, keeps it sheltered somewhat from the elements.

First, I think MCRider has it right: you've changed to to a twister that levers it against you.

Second: the little rubber collar reduces the amount of force neede to hold the throttle steady and 1/4 opening or more by damping the tendency of the spring to close. That is, unless your collar no longer grips the spring: then it does nothing. A new piece of rubber hose will help.

Lesser springs: you'll have to decide that for yourself, since you don't have a push-pull arrangement anymore. Lying under the bike after someone backed out of a driveway and sided you, while the rear wheel slices away at your calf because the cable got kinked in the impact, is just not a pretty picture...  :(

the twist is about the same as the orginal have to go all the way with my wrist. the rubber seems good cause i can hold it steedy with no effort once i twist it to where i want it. the twist it self is hard to do. but its about the same with the old controls and stock sleeve. i have a cb750 cable still which i got to work for the gsxr control but the push cable wouldnt work.
the carbs slam #$%* really nice right now just would like to put less effort if i can doesnt have to be real light im pretty strong. if i move the control out away from the master cyl it will spin on the bar cause i have to twist it so hard so i have to wedge it next to it.

have a new cable. ( do i need to lube it again)
does the arms on the carbs need some lube?( did it once didnt see a diffrence)

thanks for the help so far.

Hmmm...this sounds like a dragging throttle shaft on the carbs, maybe? That's probably the shaft you're asking about lubing. Try turning the "wing" in the center of the carb rack with your fingers after removing the spring, as a test. It should turn easily. All it is lifting is the slides.

i will give that a try see if it works. i know when i rebuilt the carbs i couldnt get the bolts loose to get the shaft apart to clean and lube it good. but i will take the spring off and see how easy it is to move.
