Something popped...
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:22:28 PM »
As I have mentioned previously on the forum, I was having a strange problem trying to use the kick start level on my bike - sometime I could get the kick starter lever to move, other times it would not budge - like it was frozen.  Today I went to kick it over and something popped.  The level is now frozen - won't budge.  I am looking at an exploded view of the assembly trying to figure out what it could have been.   I hope a tooth did not break.  Any ideas?  I did not try to run the bike - I had it out earlier and all was fine.

There is a spring loaded pawl in there that probably dislodged itself from where it was supposed to be. If it has frozen the kick start gear in place you might have to pull the motor and fix it because this turns the oil pump.

I really hope that isn't the case.  I hate to have to split the engine.  It was rebuilt not long ago.

Has it been acting up since you built the motor? I assume you built the motor because of the lovely looking 850? piston in your avatar. Installing this assembly is tricky and can easily get misaligned. I had to disassemble my motor and fix this same part because of an error in assembly of this mechanism.

If you got oil pressure should be able to run it.
Can think of a reason for it to freewheel, but not stick.
Remove clutch cover, and you can inspect, in case something cracked or is coming apart..wont take long to look.
