Posting videos online
« on: May 28, 2011, 05:37:27 AM »
I'd like to be able to start posting some vids of my builds and finished projects.

I have a digital camera (Olympus T-100) that is capable of taking video, but the vids are HUGE. A video just a couple seconds long is large enough to overwhelm my email, for example.

What program can I use to re-size the videos so I can post on Youtube, etc.
Or, would I be better off to get a dedicated video camera? If so, any cheap recommendations?

Scott,

How huge is "huge".
I routinely put 150MB videos up on youtube--no problem.

Well, to be honest, I haven't tried posting on YouTube, yet. I've always had problems with email and video file size, so I was wanting to figure out how to reduce them before taking the next step.

But, for example, I have a 5 second long video, bit rate: 64 kbps, dimensions: 320x240, size: 1.51MB.
I guess that's plenty small enough for YouTube if you're doing 150MB vids.

Would a dedicated video recorder be better for taking vids or are the file sizes and length available going to be similar to what I have with my digital still camera?

And that brings up another question....

I just watched said video and it's small. In my Windows Media Viewer, the actual video size is only about 2" x 3". If I did post the vid on Youtube, will it still be small?

Can you tell I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff? It's all new to me.

Youtube will play up to 720p HD videos that can be played in full-screen mode and still look very sharp.

Here's one I took of my son helping me adjust the front brake on the K1:

100_0543.MOV

I don't think you ever need to adjust file sizes or anything to upload to Youtube as it's all done automatically if needed, but then I could be wrong.  Any videos I want to share I just put on my Youtube account and send the link via email.
