What's the best spark plug wire?
« on: May 28, 2011, 10:51:37 AM »
Ok, I'm sure that this is opening a can of worms but I need some opinions.  I upgraded to a dynatek S and some 3 ohm dynatek coils (DC1-1) and now I m in need of a set of wires for my 750.  What should I use.  I know I keep seeing wire sets that say not for use with electronic ignition?  What's that all about?

Just plain wire, nothing special. Stay away from carbon.

Here is a few

You want 7mm copper core.

You should have resistance in the ignition spark circuit.

Pick either:
Resistance wire
Plug cap resistance
or Resistor spark plugs

Why stay away form carbon?  I keep seeing carbon core?

Carbon core deteriorates and degrades with age/use, and must be replaced periodically.
Metal core pretty much stays metal for far longer.

Use copper core wire with resistor caps with your setup. I would highly recommend going with the 5 ohm coils over the 3, you will see no advantage in this ohm drop, only problems.

Or you can get a resistor pack from Hondaman.

Ok, I went ahead and ordered a 7mm copper core kit by dynatek from z1.  I am just getting this thing together from the ground up so when you say "problems" with the 3ohm coils (which are brand new and I can't return) what should I be looking for?

That's great to hear.  I ordered this http://www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1983 and the crimp tool.

Burnt out kill switch, burnt out ignition switch, these parts were not designed with 3 ohm coils in mind.

Cool, then I am good to go.  I'm running the cycle x ignition switch with start function and custom wiring.  I guess there are some advantages to doing it all yourself. :-P
