sounds like it might have been a re-spray to begin with. i doubt the stock engine paint would peel up... unless you were cleaning with paint stripper. but ya, if you want her pretty again (guessing with out PICTURES....we thrive off photographic evidence) it'll probably mean pull motor and repaint, unless its not too bad. you might be able to touch up while the motor is in, if you can match the paint... but again, i cant tell with out PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES.  ;)

You can sand, clean and paint it up a bit with the the engine in ;) Use an aluminum color and it will match up quite well. Just lots of taping......

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=79036.msg946538#msg946538  works just the same on a Honda ;)

well it was stripping already then i used some paint thinner and confirmed there was stock paint from the factory  :P

^^^ i used that to take more of the paint off.....

so how did you get everything off prep and painted?

i also want to paint the heat sink part of my motor. i cleaned my motor off with a gallon of wd40 scrubed for 5 hrs and rinsed it off but it still has some crud in the crevices..... should i just spray over it?

and ill be using high temperature paint  ;)

Is this a joke post, or is this for real? That wire wheel/grinder combo you pictured would be overkill for stripping battleship paint in WW2...........

In my opinion, you are getting ahead of yourself here. Get that machine running, crash 3 or 4 times ( it's gonna happen) then start  making your Cafe Racer.

OK! I know where you are coming from. The best way to address the motor is to wait until you tear her apart for a rebuild and do it right.
Your best bet is to just clean really good with Simple Green (or something similar) and get a clean canvas.
More than likely you are going to get leaking bowls and the like, and your rattlecan job is going to get wrecked.
Do what you want.

and regardless if i havent started up this engine when the time comes what do i do?

i hope my float bowls dont leak.... they have new gaskets  :(

i got a 1974 cb550 engine (3/4 of it anyways) and a bent frame for $50

Compared to cars, bikes are easy, and they can be torn back apart once everything gets sorted. I am a perfectionist, and get everything wired tight, then strip the machine and get it perfect.
To each his own, but more than likely you are going to quite a few teething issues for a multitude of reasons.
The machine was a non-runner, and you have not built  SOHC Hondas before, so anything and everything can and will occur. This is fact.
Hearing the bike roar to life for the first time will beat any paint scheme you can dream of.
This is just the opinion of some guy you have never met, so take it with a grain of salt.

well either you are on the forums or in person in my garage telling me the same thing is no difference. every post you have made is very legitimate. i have no opinions on anything till i do it and have experience so you advise is gold.

the only reason it hasent been fired up is that im still trying to figure out my wireing problem..... my points are shot. i have the replacements so thats ok..... the wires on my coils where electric taped together so i have to figure that situation and get new wires and plugs (got new spark pugs  ;) ). then i have to buy a battery..... i rebuild my carbs that where filled with tree sap so i still have to remount them on the rack and im waiting for my carb sync to come in the mail.

so when all that is complete im going to either kick start it on the frame or try to wire the electric start.....

but while i sit around at my other house i just toss some ideas around. i only get to go back to my parents house to work on my bike like 1 or 2 days a week every other week till summer term A classes for college is over.... which is in 2 weeks  ;D

well #$%*, your most of the way to getting that motor out of the frame. but i agree with hannibal.... if i would have painted my motor first off, i'd be pretty pissed off right now. Not saying that you will have any trouble, but i sure did (and still do) weak floats, leaking petcock, wrong size fuel line,  the list of "gas leaking on motor" problems goes on! Get her functioning first, then after a few shakedown runs you can tear her all apart again and doll her up....

That's a lot of WD-40!! Agree with the others though...if you're tearing into the engine, you'll definitely want to do that before you paint it.

I don't know this from experience with a SOHC engine, but if you have a nicely painted car engine, and then have to pull off the intake, you can mess up that pretty paint real quick!

ow my other motor is out of my other frame  ;D i got a second motor and frame for $50 < that one is the one pictured above.

i guess i just had hopefull thinking that the engine i pick is going to start up fine and run great  :P then i was going to paint it. sorry for the confusion i was not going to paint it until everything is mint.

i was just talking "when" i paint the motor what should i do...... i just posted this becuase i was shocked the bikes engine was painted from the factory. totally thought it was just that color metal.

You could do a compression check to see which motor is better, but wait...don't you already have a build thread?
