76 cb550 F
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:47:13 PM »
So, i was given a 76 cb550 f.
So far i've cleaned the carbs, and changed the oil and spark plugs
I received a throttle and switches in the mail today and attempted to hook them up.  I think either i got the wiring hooked up wrong or the start switch is busted.
I'm confused with the 2 black wires coming from the throttle, and the one black and one green one coming from the bike  I've matched the others up with their corresponding colors.
I need to replace the starter switch first, but if anyone can clarify which wire goes where i'd appreciate it.

On the place side, i figured out how to get the starter to turn over... and it did :).
I'll post some pictures soon.
Thanks

Well, the gas tank has a small hole on the side, so i have to fix that before i can get gas into the engine and see if it starts up.
The starter switch imploded.  I got a switch from radioshack for a couple of $ and have fixed that problem.
There is a large auto/motorcycle swap meet near me this weekend.  I'm hoping i might find some parts there.

First off, welcome from Lake Travis! I have a 550F too, replaced my starter switch last year (common issue).
I'd consider getting another tank if yours is rusted, pretty easy to find.

Good luck.

Another Texas 550f.  My starter switch was bad too.  I have controls from a 72 500 on there, but no starter button. Kick start only in my house : )

I did find another tank.  Unfortunately the petcock i have doesn't fit :(.
The one that was on my bike is too large.
The tank i got is supposedly from a 77 supersport (it's green and says supersport on it ).
I'm going to do some digging around to see if i can find an appropriate petcock.

I found an adapter at the local hardware store.  Unfortunately it made it sit too low.
I'm hoping i can find a lower profile one.
The $4 option almost worked...  :-[

Another new member with another '76 CB550F. My starter works though, which is nice. I'll be watching this thread closely. :)

The correct petcock is available new for under $50 including shipping. I would just order one (in fact I did for my 77 550k)

I got a petcock off ebay for $25 shipped.  It was a for 77 cb750.  Works great.
I tried to start her up, but with no luck.
I ran out of time today, but next time i'm going to go out and start trouble shooting.
I know it's getting air, it looks like it is getting gas, so I'm going to start with checking if it is getting spark.

Make sure your battery is fully charged. Then pull a spark plug, connect it to plug wire, lay against cyl head and crank it. You should have a nice blue spark.

That my goal for today.  I also need to make sure the headlight is switched off. I had to replace the starter switch, so i will need to do that manually.  I'm going to dig around the forums for a description of the wiring

Yep, no spark.
So far i have tested the Run/Off switch, it works.
I wonder if i have the wiring correct going from the controls to the rest of the bike.
I matched the colors on all of them, except i have 2 black wires coming from the switch, and if i plug them both into the black coming from the bike, i have a left over green coming from the bike.  I have tried putting black to green and no change.

I did find out something that is bugging me.  Behind the fuse block and starter solenoid there is a green wire with no home.  It's very short and has a right angled female connector on the end.  I cant find anywhere for it to go !.  Any suggestions?

Also, any suggestions on how to proceed.  Ugh, i hate electrical work
