76 CB550 F Electrical Problems
« on: May 30, 2011, 11:44:04 AM »
Hi, i'm getting no spark.
I tested the run/off switch, and it is working.
I have areas that i suspect might be the problem.
1. I have the controls incorrectly wired to the bike.  I have matched the colors on the ones i can, but i come down to having 2 black wires from the switches, and 1 green and another black ( with 2 slots for wires ) coming from the bike.
 -- Which wire goes where?
2. I noticed a green wire with no home by the fuses.  It is behind the starter solenoid and has a right angled Female head on it.  It's quite short and i don't see any place to plug it into.

I will post a pic soon, any help will be appreciated !
Thanks

Green wire with no home is normal, I THINK.
I seem to remember seeing it.

ANd what switches are you talking about, control-wise?

Thats normal to have a green wire not connected. Not sure why its there but its  a ground so maybe for a dealer installed option.

The run/off switch ( big red knob on the right side controls ) I tested it and it is working as it should.
The start switch also works.
I should also add that the dummy lights light up ( neutral, oil pressure and high/low beam )

If I understand what you're saying...you have two black wires from the right hand control and a green one (where's the green one coming from again?) and another black with two female connectors coming from the main wiring harness?

Plug those black wires from the control into the plugs on the wire from the main harness.  They are for your kill switch/headlight.  The headlight is a black wire and a grey one (i think), while the kill switch is a black one and a black with a white stripe.

Probably plug the green into another green somewhere (unless it's the green wire behind the fuses and all that stuff - normal for a homeless green wire here)

Did that make sense?

Also, get you one of these : http://data.sohc4.net/CB550.jpg

Good Luck.

The green wire by the solenoid is the famous 'phantom' green wire that goes to nothing ( normal ) on all the SOHC bikes..... it was for a 3 prong flasher unit, but Honda only ever installed 2-prong ones so it was never used.... otherwise all black wires go together, got a 'loose' one put it with a mate !
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

All good advice.
Any all-black wire is for ignition switched power, and should connect to the harness black bullet connector. The switches can potentially be wired different ways, so each circuit has it's own power lead. The green is an oddball but I don't have a wiring diagram for your bike here... however green is always ground (on our bikes at least) so you should have a green wire with an open connector there somewhere. I assume these are the correct switchpods, of course. Using others isn't always easy.
As said, the unused green by the flasher unit is normal...
