Neutral switch won't go all the way in???
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:57:04 AM »
So for some reason my neutral switch won't go all the way into it's slot on my '78 CB750. Due to this the light stays on all the time, Any suggestions on how to get the switch to full seat?

(By the way... As you'll see over the left, I've been around for a while. I did try searching first, but the new search function blows. >:( Just thought that I would put my opinion out there on that.)

Experience of one: Use the old o-ring. The new o-ring that I got in the kit was just a tiny bit bigger.

When I rebuilt , the new Viton rings didn't want to go in . I used grease on the ring and eventually got it to go in .

On a CB750 the o-ring you get from the fiche is slightly bigger or fatter. It can cause problems with your neutral light too. Make sure when you install it you put the o-ring in the case first then push the switch in. I just found a smaller o-ring at the hardware store.

I had trouble installing my switch.
I couldn't get the switch to seat all the way.
I had to reach up in the hole with a screwdriver and push the shift drum over to the left about a sixteenth of an inch.
I actually had to get my head under the bike and look up in the hole to see the problem.
Then the switch seated all the way in and works fine.  I used the stock o-ring.

Also may sure the bike the bike in really in neutral while you're trying to install the switch.

Do you have a copy of the Honda Shop Manual or Parts List for your bike? Get one here:

Thanks all. I'll try the above to see if that works. I've got a box full of metric o-rings, so I can look through them as well. I hadn't though about shifting the drum itself. I'll have to look at that, too. Any other suggestions?

EDIT - I just edited the first post to include the model bike I have. I like how I talk about being around for a long time and still make a newby mistake.  ::)

So the switch was in further that I thought it was. I pulled it and spent about 5 minutes pumping oil out of it. Then I cleaned it out with a bit of brake cleaner. After that I got a much better continuity check with my multimeter when I checked the switch. The switch is re-seated and the light now goes out when switched into gear.  ;D

I have a bit of an oil leak and I am wondering if that switch might be a part of that... that will be another thread...
