retro-fitting early K1-3 fuel tank on K8
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:46:28 AM »
like the title says, I have a 750 K8, and was wanting replace the fuel tank with an earlier tank. I have found one ,but the petcock is on the other side(right) where mine is on the left. I was wanting to know before I bought this tank, is there any special headaches I should know about before purchasing the tank???

Thanks
Dmill

I had to deal with the same issue the other way around. There should be two lines coming off the right side petcock on your k1-k3 tank. Check your carbs if there are two lines in. The connections at the carbs will be on either side. I know some of the later carb models had one line in, if your carbs have one line in you will have to use a T or Y connector. connect the two petcock ends to the splitter with short pcs of fuel line. connect your single line into the connector and run it to the left side of the carb bank. Try to keep it below the petcock connection and run it level along the carbs, dont allow for too much slack. Cut the line a little long at first, you can always cut it back. hope this helps.

Forgot to add that the best place I found to find y and tee fittings like this is a company specializing in fittings. Take a measurement of the petcock spigots and match it up to your connections and fuel lines or bring the petcock into the store\factory\whse.

It's a simple and cheap alternative to buying the right tank/petcock. Just make sure all your connections are tight and don't leak. I'll be posting pics on the project shop and will include the ones that are pertinent to this conversation. I think there may already be a few posts on this subject. cheers
