inner exhaust ring? gasket?
« on: June 01, 2011, 09:51:32 AM »
i got a used pair of headers and after really looking at it i noticed something odd.

do headers have an inter form fitted ring?

all 3 of my header openings when i stick my finger in the headers has this lip like there is an inner ring about and inch long in the pipe and also formed fitted all the way to the opening where they fit onto the head.

one of my pips on my headers does not have this. this is why i even noticed they even had this ring thing.

has anyone else notice this? and if you where they made with the pipes and mine fell out of are they aftermarket? is this normal?

also i can not pull out the other rings.... but i havent really tried to pull them out with great strength but i have tried and they dont slide out

if it's the bit in blue you are refering to. this is needed, the 2 half moons pull this lip into the head with the exhaust clamps. hope that made sense, it's 6.00am here.

If you have the "spigot" type exhaust pipe mounting, then indeed you are screwed.
The pipes with that lip around the end are used with this style

See the two studs that go through the collar, that is what you need for the type of pipe.

Search on here for "spigot" and you will find some pics. The finned clamp has one bolt that goes sideways at the bottom of the clamp.

You can convert to the type shown in my photo. You remove the mounting hardware that are attached with Philips head screws and replace them with 8mm studs.
But you wouldn't be the first to fail miserably trying to get them out.

This is the spigot style : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB750-SOHC-Exhaust-Clamps-Header-Mounts-Flanges-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem4cf79208adQQitemZ330571057325QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

post pictures. I have a few exhausts and flanges that I may be able to help you with missing parts.

Are they stock OEM pipes, or aftermarket? And what bike is this?

If I read the diagram correctly, you have the style where the header has a flange or ring as an integral part of the header. I think on some stlyes of pipes it is a separate item which is inserted into the header from the factory and affixed (welded) into place. That provides the ring that the collars push on to draw the header into the O Ring style gasket in the head and finally make a seal.

If you header has one pipe without that ring you are screwed. Well not entirely, there is little on earth a good machinist / welder can't fix.

The ring itself is not a gasket. The gasket is a separate piece which is often smooshed into the head and you have to pick it out to put a new one in.

But that is a separate issue from the flange on the header.

sorry this is for my 1976 cb550

i believe these headers are OEM. if you ever stuck your finger in your headers you would feel it.

Them is here..item no. 2..for 4.71..

Those are the collars, identified in the original post sketch. That's not what he's asking about (I think) but rather the non-removable lip, or flange, at the end of the header itself.

To XSSmooth: Those lip/flanges have been known to come off or rather be broken/sheared off from vibration of a loose pipe and/or rust. Still probably no help. Waiting for your pictures.

Darn it!! Is that piece important?
