Project CB550 cafe-tracker
« on: May 31, 2011, 10:18:36 PM »
So here we go... I'm a younger guy (25) who grew up with triumphs, bsa's, and honda's, all older than 1976. I just love the looks and quirks of old bikes. New technology and 190 mph top speeds, plastic body cladding and space frames just don't do it for me. Hence I shall set off on my first major solo project. Dad's direct guidance won't be there, I'm in the deep end, let's hope I listened to him well enough to swim. He gave me a half completed 1976 CB 550 (luckily the expensive half is what's done: motor, carbs, new wheels, tires, brakes, etc.) I am itching to get this baby on road.
So obviously many of the members here in my situation who want a modded out bike go the cafe racer route, but I want something a little different. I was always fascinated by flat track racing, and decided to throw some of that influence at this project. A homologation of street, track, bobber, multi-cylinder goodness, if you will. And I will document as much of my trials and tribulations as I can here with as many pics as possible. Please chime in, ask questions or lend a guiding hand to one who will certainly need it!

Got the bike in the garage and set up. The frame has been painted already, everything is in rolling chassis. Motor is mounted. This is my starting point. Ihave a list of to do's:

Strip tank and refinish
Finish half completed wiring (ugh I hate wires, tips tricks greatly appreciated)
Polish removable engine cases
Redesign smaller tail light ( I HATE the stock one)
Cut down front fender
Mount "steer horn" bars
Fabricate new muffler set
Re-cover seat

I know it runs which is a plus. The engine and frame already got painted by my Dad, just need to be wiped off after sitting for a year or so, while he worked on his Triumph. I plan to do everything I can from polish to paint, wiring to seat covering. The exhaust is trashed. I'll try to salvage the headers, but the 4 original bell flower mufflers are toast. I plan to find short reverse mega's and fab a 4 into 2 system. First things first, want to button up the motor before i start wiring, and that means polishing the cases before bolting them back in place!
