Unless a cylinder reads zero compression. I always run a long unused engine for a bit to see if it will re-seat the bits obstructed by liquids turned to glue or surface rust interfering with amicable contact. ...for a street engine.
If I were going to race it, I would take the whole thing apart to ensure the parts were tip top.
I returned several SOHC4s from long disuse. Some had "bad" compression on one cylinder making my worry a bit, until it had some run time on it. One example was my 77 CB550F (my current avatar). It had 8K miles on the bike and one cylinder was 50 Lbs lower than the others from sitting for 15 years. After 100 miles of operation, they all read nearly the same. This engine feels like it has more power than all the rest of my cb550s. Don't know why. I'm thinking it was a Wednesday or Thursday production example. It's just got a like more "snap" to it than the others, and not I'm going to take it apart just to find out why.
If you happily learn from mistakes, go ahead and take apart the motor. It will cost you at least a gasket kit. And, whatever else you break off, strip, or talk yourself into replacing "while your in there". But, it might not be necessary to have the motor run well. IME
