« on: May 31, 2011, 07:31:46 PM »
I had my 550 a couple weeks. It had been sitting for 3 years before i bought it,any way i cleaned the top of my carbs and it started right up only with the choke on though it wouldn't idle. so i pulled the rack and fully cleaned all four carbs thoroughly now i cant get bike to start I've got spark in all four cylinders and fuel in all carbs what did i do wrong? somebody help me out on this one.
I am an avid bike enthusiast, right now i got a 83 nighthawk 550, and an 82 kz440 thats about to have its frame chopped and have the honda engine put on it as soon as i can get it running to my standards.

Hey, sorry but this reply will not be as helpful as you would like.

Your bike is a double overhead cam (DOHC) rather than the single overhead cam that this board caters to. It uses constant velocity (CV) carbs that function differently than those of the SOHC bikes.

I would post in the "other bikes" forum where you will likely find owners with better knowledge of your bike.

Now, that said, take a look at your plugs, do they smell like gas? If they do you know that gas is getting to the engine. If they don't, try spraying starter fluid or carb cleaner into the carbs and immediately check to see if the bike starts. If it does then you have confirmed that gas is not getting to the engine and you should pull the carbs again and spray cleaner through each orifice to confirm that all the passages are clear. Check the rubber at the top of the CV throttle valve too, they do wear out and crack, which plays with the mixture.

If it's like my FJ there are two components, the master cylinder at the bar and a slave on the engine. Funtioinally it's just like a disk brake. The master on the bar creates the hydraulixc pressure that pushes a piston in the slave, which moves the rod to disengage and engage the clutch.

The slave is what typically goes bad (look for what brake fluid leaking from the left side of the engine case ahead of the countershaft). Against the advice of my father (and I should have known better right there) I tried to rebuild mine and it didn't take. I ended up replacing it.

If the clutch isn't disengaging, try bleeding the slave first, again like the brake calipers, you could just have air in the line that is keeping the piston from moving in the slave.

The slave gets bled just like a brake caliper. The diagram I found shows the slave on the same side as the lever (again, like my Yamaha was), so you can bleed it yourself.

You probably need to remove the case over the clutch (drain the oil first and it's probably worth buying or making a new gasket, I prefer to just make them) so you can confirm that the rod is moving. With a hydraulic clutch there isn't really much adjustment. Perhaps the rod is bent.

the lift rod is'nt bent, i think a spring on the clutch plate or the cluthch plate might be stuck as was the slave cylinder piston so i'll pull it apart tomorrow and check it out thanks for the input.
