Flashers both come on?
« on: June 04, 2011, 03:03:34 PM »
Okay, so I've been doing a lot of wiring, and it's all been going smooth. Last major thing is the turn signals... and I'm ready to flip. They are universal 3 wire LED ones from CycleReCycle.

On the front turn signals, the left turn signal is wired to the (brand new) switch through the red switch, and the black is going directly to the negative battery term. Signal hot wire is going directly to the battery for now. With just the left hooked up, it turns on fine. If I connect the ground on the right wire to the battery... it turns on....

WTF?

Why would both turn signals turn on when only one actually has a hot line? Both are grounded, but if I flick on the left signal, the right turns on dimly.

Because you don't know what year or model your bike is and what wire diagram to look at.

You might want to look at the turn advisory lamp at the dash panel.  But, that what vary with model, year, and bike.

I had this problem on my cb550 when I switched to LED lights . I tracked down the wiring diagram and found that the turn signal indicator light on the dash feeds from both sides, with no isolation from the other, so it cross fed to both sides until I pulled the indicator bulb. This fixed the 4-way flash problem but left me without an indicator, but the turn beeper still works.

I don't have the indicator light hooked up, I noticed how common that was.

I noticed that with front and rear LEDs on a CB350 twin I could only hook up the power wire.  If I hooked up the ground wire, then I got the exact issue you are experiencing.  Also, if I didn't have both front lights hooked up, then both rear lights would flash.

The dash bulb has one wire going to the positive of each side turn light.
When turn lights are on the dash bulb earths through the non flashing side,
With normal bulbs through the system the dash bulb does not flow enough current to light up the non flashing side.
With LED turn signals the dash bulb flows enough current to light up the non flashing side.

Easy fix;
Cut both wires from the dash bulb.
Put a diode on the end of the wires coming from the turn lights so that they let power flow out of the wire.
Tee both the diodes to one of the dash bulb wires.
Earth the other dash bulb wire.
