Will the world explode if I use yamabond5?
« on: June 04, 2011, 06:30:38 AM »
So I don't know of any local places for hondabond etc, but I have plenty of yamabond5.  This is the black, drying type.  Not the semi drying type.

How terrible will that be when I go to split in the future?

It didn't explode when I used Permatex Ultra Grey RTV Gasket Maker and it matches the engine colour so it hardly shows at all at the mating edges.

Well it will be more terrible than if you had used the semi drying type, which is preferred.  Autoparts will have the semi drying type.

Does the YB5 have silicone in it? That would be highly un recommended and your world may indeed explode.

Permatex form-a-gasket #3 I think is what you need.  I think #3 is kind that never hardens.

The venerable Hondaman mentions it in his book, but I can't remember if he says 2B or 3.

The recommended product "Hondabond", is actually 3M Threebond 1104, same also as Yamabond 4.

Yamabond 5 is a different product and probably not the ideal choice in this situation due to its curing characteristics.

My fear is that it would start settting up too quickly, and potentially hold the cases apart slightly, increasing bearing clearance (which of course can lead to your world exploding).

just a thought but I think permatex avaition sealent never completely hardens either.  That is what is commonly used inbetween the cases on a VW type 1 engine.  Available at most auto stores.

No it will not explode, it will implode! :o

I believe it is permatex #2 that doesn't harden.

I figured since internet answers are generally over dramatic, I formed my question to match.

I ended up finding some hondabond4 locally.

I played with the yamabond5, it is VERY hard to apply.  It is very stringy, dries very fast, and very difficult to spread.  And I believe it is a silicone based product.

Hondabond4 was so nice to work with, I applied it with an acid brush.

Thanks for the recomendations guys.

As an answer to the thread title...

Yes.  A more relevant question would be to ask when?
