my turn signals act like hazard flashers
« on: June 05, 2011, 11:34:40 AM »
'79 CM400T:  When my L or R turn signal switch is on, all 4 turn signal bulbs flash (and the behavior of the front running light turning OFF while turn signaling is correctly working for both L and R.)  I prolly got a short somewhere - can anybody suggest a possible short location or another troubleshooting technique?  Thanks!

Ouch.  I just looked inside the rear fender and I've got frayed wires in the harness - must have been that wicked pothole I hit last week.

That's all fixed now.  I used shrink tubing on the frayed (and shorted) lines, butt-joint soldered the 5 leads (cut them to get them through the 'channel' (but I would have had to cut them anyway to get the shrink tubing on), and then routed them OUTSIDE the rear fender into the rear brake light assy (all were color-coded).  There was enough length so I didn't need to add extensions.  It doesn't look too terrible; you'll all get over it.  Got a new flasher at Pep Boys (about $7).  Removed the internal 'channel' and ground down the 3 'rivets'.  Cool.  Now I can lose weight later ;).
