Rainsuit, where to buy, price range, preferred brand ?
« on: April 22, 2006, 04:21:49 PM »
I need a rainsuit for a 700 mile round trip I'll be gpng on in early June. One that's good enough to keep me dry, but not too hot, as low temps shouldn't be an issue. Any suggestions?
Thanks ...jim

I usually use one of those really cheap plastic rain suits you can get at walmart in the US.  They do tend to rip out after a bit, but that's nothing a roll of duct tape can't fix.

I bought a nice one-piece suit from denniskirk.com 5 years ago, "motodress". Still going strong and dry.
BUT it does get awfully hot in the summer storms.
and Terry, it is NOT a dress!

I have an antique Rukka with rubber toxic chemical gloves and Totes with baby powder inside.  The problem with the Rukka is it takes forever to put on and I get start getting claustiphobia and want to start tearing at it and screaming. Then, if you do more than blink and breathe, it makes you sweat and you get soaked from the inside.
BTW- sleeves go OUTSIDE the gloves and boots. The boots are obvious, but the gloves- when your sleeves are inside, tht just funnels the water right in there.
Firest Gear seems to make some good stuff.  I get the feeling that you get what you pay for.

Rain suit?  I've never worn one.  Riding through heavy rain can be refreshing, partly because it makes one feel like a genuine madman!

I bought a two piece Nelson-Rigg rain suit from Dennis Kirk.  It will keep you dry, but at the same time, you can get a little warm.   I have only used the top part a couple of times, since I usually use the rain liner inside my Joe Rocket Jacket.  The rain suit jacket is sized a little small and will not fit over the Joe Rocket.  The pants fit fine over my jeans, so I wear them for cold weather as much as rain.

Thank you for the suggestions gentlemen (and Uncle Ernie ;D). You've been very helpful. In the 35 years I been riding, I've never owned any proper gear, save for the helmet, so this is all new to me.
I usually don't ride in rain, but, like everybody on occasion, have no choice. The thought of wearing dripping wet underwear for hundreds of miles, well, that just takes the fun out of it.

Motorcycle Consumer News rated The Tourmaster its best suit for the money. This was several years ago. I don't remember the price but I bought the two piece suit and found it to be excellent. Packs small ,protects great, Has leg shields on the bottom of the pants so you don't accidently burn them on the pipes. It breathes really well and is comfortable and easy to get in and out of. It will be the last rainsuit I will ever need. I always keep it in my saddlebags and it has come in pretty handy from time to time.  On long trips I even pack those yellow Hazerdous waste boots to go over my shoes. I'm snug as a dry bug in a rug and don't worry, everyone looks dumb in a rainsuit.  Eli

Stupid question here- but, a rainsuit goes on over your leathers, right?  So do the manufacturers take that into account when you order a suit for your normal jacket size?  Or if you order for your normal size, is it just gonna fit you without your leathers, so you'd need to intentionally order a few sizes too big?

They are usually  made big to go over leathers.

Good thread.  I am looking into rain gear for the first time ever too.  I do happen to have one of those Walfart style plastic 2 piecers.  It does fit over my leather jacket, so that is good.  It has little plastic snaps in the front.  Will this jacket really stay shut if I don't have a fairing?

Is it a faux pas to where a mossy-oak camouflage rain suit while riding a SOHC?  What mossy-oak camouflage lacks in visibility it makes up for in blending in with the locals in Wisconsin.

What do you do with the hood?  Seems it would just flap around and make noise or rip it off.  Oh wait, maybe it’s not a hood, it’s a Walfart rain jacket balaclava combo.  But does it go over or under the protective bandana? :P

Camouflage and plastic.  Seems like a great idea on a bike.  Highly visible and will melt.  I’ll make sure to tuck the pants into my boots.  Yeah, I might get water in them, but it seems better than mossy-oak shrink wrapped legs.

Sorry, I don't remember. There are plenty of tourmaster dealers online and the suits are under $100.00. All I can say is I'm very happy with mine. Eli
