77 CB550F slow jet extraction/replacement
« on: June 05, 2011, 04:46:07 PM »
So I'm in the middle of trying to clean my the carbs on my 77 cb550f. I noticed that one of the slow jets broke off and I cant seem to get the thing out.

I guess I'm going to try to find some type of really small extractor from sears or some place. That seems like the obvious best thing to do but if anybody has any better suggestions on how to get it out of there, I'm all ears.

Secondly, in looking for a #38 slow jet replacement I came upon this: http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/KEIHIN_PILOT_JET_N424-74C_38_P4965C91.cfm

Is this the right jet I need? It looks correct except that the "top" view on the site doesn't show the flathead screwdriver slot on it. Does any "Kehein pilot jet #38" work or does it have to say it's specifically for a CB550F? There are a few on eBay that say they're for CR550s http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KEIHIN-Carburetor-PJ-38-Slow-Jet-55-Honda-CR-500-cr500-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1c1c3475b5QQitemZ120732284341QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Thanks for any help you can give.

Does your bike have the old style or PD carbs? What's the stamped on number?

The CR500 is a big single dirt bike, this is a #55 pilot jet: kinda big for your use.
There are several types of pilot jet but if you find one that looks the same it should be OK: KeiHin didn't make many different types, the differences are pretty obvious if you see a picture.
The numbers are consistent - a KeiHin #38 will have a 0.38mm orifice regardless of the type.

My carbs have the old style 069A carbs. Slow jet = 38, Main jet = 98

So this one would work? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Keihin-FCR-PJ-PWK-PWM-Carburetor-Carb-Pilot-Slow-Jet-38-/190411619804?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c556abddc

I'm not sure what all the letters ("FCR PJ PWK PWM") mean? All I know is that I have Keihin 069A carbs.

The part number you want is 99124-076-0380.

Put that into Google and search.  Call the place and verify they have stock before ordering online.

Or... This place...

...will sell you something that fits into the carb body, but you will need to shorten the length and cut a new slot for the screwdriver end.

Cheers,

Check this guide
http://keihincarbs.com/images/getti-serie3minimo.jpg
to see the various types.
Those letters are Keihin carb types. The FCR, for example, is a racing flat slide carb series.
TT's idea of searching for the Honda part code is excellent. He suggests checking stock because many online sellers have zero stock, they order from Honda when they get your order. Many also list lots of obsolete parts that they can't actually get.
David Silver or CMSNL don't tend to list parts they don't have, but they are in Europe so shipping can get expensive - plus their prices can be rather high.

Again, awesome info. Thanks a lot I should have thought to google the part number.

I ended up drilling the old broken jet all to hell and got it out of the carb. A new jet is on it's way. Thanks everybody
