Its definetly time for a new chain. I really would like to go to the 530 setup b/c of price.
I have the stock 630 setup. I searched the forum about conversions and it did nothing but confuse me.
Should I just stay with the 630 or convert to 530?
If I convert to 530 what is the best sprocket combo?
Ebay has kits 18-39 18-46  18-40 18-43 17-40 17-43 etc etc

Hoping someone else here has a 77 and has some experience with this.
Thanks

Stick with the stock set up. Ive done it it(on 77/78 750Fmodels) and have ridden the both. Its an extra $100 plus. I agree that the 630 is expensive but  Youll be alot  happier! The ratios might seem small but its really noticeable. Others have said this. "Honda engineered it for a reason!"

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

My 630 oring setup wasn't much more than a 530. But I geared my rig down for side car duty and wanted the heaviest chain I could put on this bike. Haven't had to adjust it yet. Unless you are looking for every last possible HP for drag racing you won't really notice the difference.

I just switched to 530 on my '78 (should be the same).  It was easy peasy chicken squeezy, saves a hair of weight, and is a little cheaper.  530's these days are, by most guesses, a helluva lot better than they used to be.  Ultimately it's up to you, but know that if you go to the 530 you're going to have to change your gearing in order to keep the same or similar ratio

I put 17-48 on my 78F3 with a 530 o-ring chain.

I lose a little grunt on the bottom end (supposedly - pants dyno cannot detect) but I gain a couple thousand RPM of comfort on the highway.

The difference between 17-48 and the stock 14-43 is like having an extra gear. Now, I never need to shift beyond 3rd in town, as my revs get too low for 4th/5th. (I don't like to run it below 3k if I can avoid it...)

It all depends on how you will be riding, and the terrain in your area. If you are in a hilly area like I am the stock gearing is great. If you stay with the 630 the tooth count is stamped on the gears.

If you like the way it performs now, stick with the same final gear ratio. Your '77K came with 15/41 (2.73 ratio) and the 630 chain. Using 17/46 with the 530 chain will give you almost exactly the same ratio, just a hair taller .

I do a LOT of highway driving on my 78 (same critter as your 77) K always followed by several miles on city driving on each end of my daily commute. I'm a fairly big (read ....heavy) guy at 230+ pounds, and I find the stock chain/sprocket set up is just great for this type of daily driving.
