Honda CB550 wiring harness?
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:31:38 AM »
My 1976 Honda CB550F is in desperate need of a wiring harness/loom.  I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get a new one for the CB550?  Do they exist.  I figured if I'm going  to really ride this bike after 35 years it could use some cleaning up.  I have already completed the back end (which is the easy part) but the front under the gas tank is a rats nest.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.   ;D

if you find a source id like to hear about it too!

The only real option for us 550 owners is to either clean up the one you have (going over all the connections etc..) or build your own from a wiring diagram...  or buy a used one off someone parting out their bike, which likely isnt in much better shape then yours.

Post something in  the parts wanted section of the board. Someone will be stripping a 550 and be able to get you one.

Unless your harness is totally fubar, as in melted insulation inside the sheathing, I would try to salvage it.

^ god ive posted my butt off about the cb550 wiring harness..... im in the same boat. i was thinking about using a 750 harness because they make new ones for those bikes and just ditching the extra wires......

partsnmore.com have brand new cb750 wire harnesses for $75+shipping

if you think about it.... all the colored wires, all the shrink wrap, all the connectors (which are a lot more expensive than you think) and a bullet crimping tool if you dont have one and the TIME it take you to make it.... for $75 i rather buy a 750 harness and frankenstein it to fit the 550

but i dont know if its possible.....

If you have bad wires the XS has the best idea. wouldn't be hard to do and then you would have everything brand new. Sounds like a good plan.

i have the technology. we can rebuild them..... ch ch ch ch ch ch ch( slow motion kickstart here)  mine cost me $25 to make, but i skimped on some colors, mainly turn winker colors. i ran green ground, red to always hot and black to switch hot, plus blue and yellow to points. everything else just got a labled end and changed to molex connectors. i could make 10 harness's for 50 each....i happen to have the time as well

ya my harness i could litterally pull the wires and they will snap in half because the wires on the inside are all rusted out!

what gauge of wire are you using. would a bigger gauge of wire be beneficial for the bike?

also the wire harness has a lot of 1-4 connectors ets etc would it be better run individual wires?

n00b question - what are the actual wires called that make up the wires in the harness?  i don't know much about electricity except that it hurts, but i'm imagining there's some kind of standardized name for this type of wire, and assume that it's made to some spec.

I googled around for 12V wiring, etc etc, but really got nowhere slow.

ah you are asking about what guage of wire, braided wire with a certain number of strands.
yes there is a specific  description and I'm sure someone will know.

I'm curious as well.

Before you jump at any old harness that comes along, be sure it's compatible with your model. There are some subtle differences between models.
Does yours have the starter safety unit or does it have the diode?
Does yours have a short ground wire attached to one of the horn connections or both wires running back to the loom?
Does yours have a park/headlight switch on the R/H control?
Is yours equipped with running lights?
It could prove a bit of nightmare if all the bits on your bike aren't compatible with the loom.
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators.
We haven't met yet.

I may have a NOS (new) harness laying around, partnumber 32100-374-***.

Don't know the last three figures, but I could find out.'

Could ship it to the US, but it's not cheap.

My harness is in *decent* shape -- everything seemed to work except for my right-rear turn signal (which just quite working one day).

My main reason for asking about the type/rating of wire is for the purpose of making one  from scratch as kind of a "preventative maintenance" project.  all of those wires are pretty old and stiff, and i'd like to redo it with shrink tubing as opposed to the electrical tape wrap that the existing one has.

so yeah, if anyone knows what that type of wire is called and maybe a supplier i'd appreciate the info.
