« on: June 08, 2011, 03:22:05 pm »
what is the difference between the bullet connectors and receptacle connectors other than the shape. is there an advantage for one or the other?

The flat "spade" connectors are available everywhere. This is a major plus. They are quite a bit bulkier than the OEM bullets and multi-tap types are unusual,  minuses. The "bullet" connectors pictured are less available and not compatible with the OEM Honda ones because they are bigger - minuses I think.
If I was making my own harness I would probably use spades. And standard Molex or AMP multi-pin shell connectors for the engine plug and other multi connectors.
I'm not, though.

I strongly recommend Vintage Connections. Connectors are much higher quality and a lot better crimp connection (using their tool). These are the only ones I will use on my bike:

More expensive, but well worth it for me to have reliable, trouble-free connections.

++++1 on vintage connections a lot better off in the long run. The only others I would use is the new style weather pacs. on newer cars.not period correct but a better connecttor.
Here are the ones I like if your not staying stock. lots of other places may be cheaper just goggle weather pac connecttor

If you don't find what need at VC these folks sell smaller quantities, have a couple of items that VC doesn't, and they ship instantly!

Yeah, don't use the cheap HF connectors like the PO of one of my bikes did!
Those cheapo bullet connectors aren't the right size to mate with the Honda OEM connectors anyway.

The connections from Vintage Connections are of a much higher quality than I've seen in electronic shops. I think they are definitely worth it as it a professional quality crimper.

Order a few extra connectors so you can do a couple of practice crimps on scrap wire. There's a little bit of a knack to it, but once you get the hang of the crimp tool it's impossible to tell the difference between your crimp and the original factory crimp. These connections are so tight that i don't even twist the copper strands for an even better OEM look, and I believe the un-twisted connection has better surface area contact due to the rolled action of the crimp process and the way it gathers the strands inside the connection. The tail of the connector is even designed to put the crimp on the insulating jacket too. I was hesitant to spend the money on a connection system that I had no personal experience with, but the results completely erased all doubt. I am working my way through my harness to eliminate the cumulative resistance of the 33 year-old connections that have started to cause the periodic, gradual meltdown of my 15A main fuse. So far, so good.

you could also buy a new harness from Parts 'n more, as they're only about $75 and come with all new wire and connections.  I went this route since i didn't have a full harness to start from and didn't feel like sourcing new wire.  i've considered re-doing all the connections using the VC kit, but i'm not sure yet.
