Electric Bikes!
« on: June 08, 2011, 04:00:29 PM »
I'm pretty into them. Here's some cool ones.

MotoCzysz

This one has 3 motors that put out around 120 HP. The newest bike is a liquid cooled motor that supposedly can do 200HP burst.

Hammarhead Volta:

A one off made by Hammarhead industries, using a Royal Enflield chassis, and a big hub motor.

A streetfighter made by Noah Podelefsky (who posts over at the electric motorcycle forum elmoto.net). Uses a DC series wound motor, and a battery pack by GBS at Elite Power Solutions. Top speed approaching 70 and a range of 50 miles or so per charge. He's using the same battery pack that I'm using for my CB750 build.

Amarok P1. Uses 2 agni motors, and puts around 80 or so HP to the back wheel, but it's main advantage is it's incredibly low weight, using a monocoque construction for the frame/battery holder.

The Mission R. Super gorgeous, but nobody has ever seen it move under it's own power. They trailer it to races and look at it.

Another bike built by an elmoto.net member, Ed Fargo. His bike is based on a DOHC CB750 frame, and uses a fairing from airtech streamlining. He's gotten it to do the ton thanks to his high output headway batteries. The finished bike only weighs 312 pounds! It has enough battery to go about 40 miles.

The Swigz bike puts out 250HP(!) and requires sophisticated software to keep it from constantly popping wheelies. It currently is the fastest electric motorcycle....ever. It reached a speed of 194 MPH in a mile run.

And lastly, the Brammo Empulse. Which is going to be available for sale next year. Apparently they are implementing a 6-speed gearbox, and the biggest available battery pack gets 100 miles to a charge.

Just kind of a post to show you guys what's going on with this side of motorcycling. I can't wait to get my bike up and running, it'll be the first lithium powered SOHC I've come across.

If you guys have any questions or anything I love to talk about this stuff.

There's a great show/doc about motoczysz produced a few years back, I'm sure you've seen it - "Birth of a Racer"

I was just sad after watching.  It seemed they were so close - who knows.    Always thought it was one of the most beautifully designed bikes out there.

I think they ran that electric bike in the Isle of Man TT - didn't they ?

Really cool to see the electric bike out the the CB frame etc.    Can't wait to see what you end up with.  You still have one of my favorite forum names...
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

The one based on the CB750 frame is beautiful.

There is actually a new movie that's already out about the first Isle of Man TT for electric bikes, it's called Charge. It's narrated by Ewan McGregor.

I'd post a youtube link but it's blocked at work.

I have a CAD model of how I'm planning on attacking my build, but that's for another thread.

Rutter said in the interview after the race that it would easily do 170 mph, just missed out on £10,000 for first electic bike to average over 100 mph round the course, cheers Mick.

It's crazy to see that there has been 3 Motoczysz bikes in 2 years, each of them with such huge jumps in horsepower. I wish batteries could keep up with this electric motor development.

it will do 170 but not for long , to do the full 37 and three quarter miles it has to go much slower . three years ago the bikes were all very amateurish but this year there where some very trick machines indeed .  must have broke rutters heart not wining that 10 grand ...... only 20 seconds short !!

Here's a video of Chip Yates doing some runs at Pikes Peak.

He's got the extra big battery pack on behind his seat. We call it the Pizza Box. He had to sacrifice a lot of space to fit that gigantic 240HP AC motor.
