My sisters father-in-law had a similar experience with a horse and his Tacoma pick up. It's actually kind of ironic really. He is a large animal vet by profession, and was headed to a critical choking horse call. He was only a few miles from his house (which is out in the country) when he saw a horse running a long the right side of the road, he started to slow because of it but never saw the horse on the left side of the road. It ran right in front of him and he broad sided it at speed, it made it up to the windshield pillars of the truck. Needless to say it totaled the truck but he was OK, but the horse was so badly injured he almost couldn't euthanize it (it didn't have enough blood left circulating in it body). Right before he was going to put a bullet in it, it died. Unfortunately so did the horse he was going to see. Talk about one bad night.
